So, how did your New Years holiday go? Smile
Trying out LXDE (in an attempt to make Dongwa even faster in 3D rendering, now that Steam For Linux and Team Fortress 2 Linux is in open beta. I'm getting only 60FPS, and this is an SLI-enabled box!). People who think Metro looks bad should stay away from it Tongue

IMO, Metro looks great to me, but I really can't grasp using a tablet style interface on Greta or Lilly. With Lilly, Launchpad has been integrated rather well, especially with the Apple Keyboard since there is a button to bring up Launchpad. It's a key iOS feature, but at least you still have a desktop.

With Metro, they want you to use it all the time, regulating the desktop as an "app" for classic style applications, and completely removing the Start menu from the desktop. (you can get the Start menu back with third party tools) Metro is more suited for the Microsoft Surface tablet, and I would likely use Windows 8 if I ever get a laptop with a touch screen interface. But as it stands, I'm sticking with Windows 7.

Oh, I have been finding some homebrew Genesis roms lately, ranging from a complete port of the Atari ST game "Rick Dangerous" to a complete port of the classic "Super Mario Bros". And I am not talking about the crappy ones either....

This SMB port actually runs on my portable Genesis. The music plays back at a lower pitch due to the handheld's rather poor sound emulation.

Let's talk about the sound emulation..
My portable Genesis clone is made by AtGames, who has an official license from Sega to produce new consoles and handhelds with their technology and games. Unfortunately, they chose emulation over a SOAC, and while the games play fine, the music really suffers. The audio is lower pitched than it should be, and in some games, the music plays fine with the lower pitch, but other games' music just gets murdered. The AtGames hardware dates back to 2008, and they still haven't really fixed the sound emulation.

The reason why I wanted my portable Genesis for Christmas is that it's essentially the only way to play Genesis games on the go these days. Sure, there is the Sega Nomad, but those things are getting old and the battery life is very poor.... about two hours on six AA batteries. There have been other newer handheld Genesis systems around since then, but all of them were made by AtGames, and only once they nearly got the sound emulation right.

Despite that, I still do like my portable Genesis system very much. It has good battery life, nearly six to seven hours total. And it has a great selection of Sega and Capcom games built in. (It does have about 40 other games, but these are homebrew quality and most are so-called "brain games". The only one worth noting is "Whack a Wolf". Tongue I also like the ability to place my own ROMs on the SD card, but until I get something called the "Retrode" to legally back up my own Genesis cartridges, I'm limted to homebrews and Chinese pirates.
What.... is the music.... of life?

Hmmm, I don't know... The Cadence of Death?
The Yodel of Death? (uncertain, since Princess Leia is The Yodel of Life)
You... are not... worthy...

Just a Skyrim joke
New Year's was decent.

A shame that thought had turned out to be oh so untrue

Holy barnacles, you scared me. My first response thought was of my naming one of my youngest daughters after Madeline Kahn.

Nah, it was a snippet of my parody of "Want You Gone". It refers to Fluttershy and her position in relative to Madeline, and her "corruption".

Ugh, man. I need more sleep. I stayed up all night trying to grab Adobe's CS2 suite they seem to be giving away free of charge (and only for god knows how long). I still have three packages to download.

I took a look at it, and I already got most of the media software listed there thanks to getting a second hand disk set of "Adobe Production Studio". I already have Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0.

Also, I didn't know Adobe released version 11 (aka XI) of their Reader. I go and download it for Greta, and I can't get it to start up. It keeps opening and closing without any error. I checked the event log, which did list the error that Adobe Reader XI produced, and it was related to her Nvidia drivers.

Curious, I check the NVIDIA program settings, and Adobe Reader XI is set to use her GeForce GPU. I switch it back to Integrated Graphics, and Adobe Reader XI now runs fine.

I may register for the Adobe Help Forums tonight because there is another user there that has the exact same issue. I need to share my experience just in case said user also has a laptop that has NVIDIA Optimus.

I don't use Adobe Reader on Lilly since Preview and Safari already have built in PDF readers.
Eh, you can afford them. If I buy those I will have to kiss my existing plans goodbye. And as it stands, my existing plans are of higher priority.

Depression fit incoming again. I need a break.
