I guess I can blame Dave and Wade for why I followed suit with giving codenames to my devices. In most cases I name it after characters from the American Girl series, though I did name some after characters from different series as well.
I've been giving my comptuers names for a while, I just rarely ever call them by it. I don't really call Sophie.. Sophie, I just tend to call her my computer. Whoopsie.
Angel Wrote:Never thought of making a cute desktop wallpaper with the "name" of the computer on it. I decided that at least temporarily, that would be pretty cute. I named this computer after a character from Tales of Graces, Sophie!

Great job on the wallpaper there! Smile I also like the clean desktop as well.

If you want to see more desktop wallpaper from me, David and others dating back to 2011, there is a thread in the "Computers, Games & Tech" forum called "The Post Your Desktop Thread".

For my PC's names, here is where their names come from:

Pablo - Named after the title character from the underappreciated "Pablo, the Little Red Fox" cartoon.

Audrey - Named after the cute ostritch from "64 Zoo Lane"

Greta - Named after the cute polar bear girl from the also underappreciated "Little Polar Bear" cartoons.

Lilly - A special case here. For years, I wanted a powerful computer system named after one of my favorite characters from "Timothy Goes to School". I originally was going to build Lilly myself, but I ended up using a Mac Mini instead. Though I did have my doubts about her this last year, I still realize she is very powerful when it comes to video and audio editing. Smile Oh, and she is also a great Mac too.

Finally, the last computer I have is Chrysanthemum. Such a beautiful name. It's based on a picture book by Kevin Henkes of the same name, and it's a wonderful story. Chrysanthemum is an older Gateway Tablet/Laptop convertible PC, but sadly, she doesn't work too well anymore thanks to a bad motherboard. Even so, I hang on to her since she was my first laptop.
Well, I give names to my computer because they're interconnected. Trying to remember their IP address is a pain, so I just have Maxwell keep track of their IP address and when accessing them just call them by name. I have a local Domain Name Server system running on Maxwell.

As for the name of my computers:

Edison - Named after the firefly from the Leapfrog Learning Friends series of toys. Currently the most beefy rig of the entire Geek-hole and is primarily used to run Windows games.
Sally - Named after Spot's mom. Previously my most powerful rig, she's been upgraded, but even then she still has nothing on Edison. She is only used for XP compatibility nowadays, since there are some games *cough*Fallout3*cough*SonicHeroes*cough* that runs like crap under 7. Also used to sync my Leapfrog and VTech toys.
Dongwa - Named after Sagwa's brother from Sagwa the Chinese Siamese Cat. The second most powerful system in the Geek-Hole. Used for Linux gaming (and is how I got my Tux accessory in Team Fortress 2). The name was previously used for my Compaq Presario 930 laptop, which has since been retired.
Clementine - Named after Caillou's friend. Built mostly for Android development, although she's beefy enough to at least run some games.
Kiki - My Mac Mini. Named after one of Cassie's sister. Used to sync my iPad and for iOS development, as well as casual web browsing.
BingoBeaver - Named after a character from an obscure cartoon called "The Get-Along Gang". Fitted for retrogaming and equipped with two of the best DOS-capable sound cards money can buy. I might add MIDI composition to his duties in the near future once I acquire the necessary cables. Also no slouch as he is fitted with a 550MHz Pentium 3 and 256MB of RAM (all accessible from DOS thanks to QEMM 97). Also planning to add a 3DFX Voodoo card (or maybe a pair of Voodoo2s in SLI) to him in the near future, free IRQs permitting (slots are no problem, he still has two open PCI slots. The problem is that DOS may have flaky IRQ sharing support and can't map IRQs above 15).
Cleo - Named after that poodle from Clifford (inspired by an ad where Clifford and Emily were using iMacs to e-mail each other). Also used for Retrogaming, albeit for Classic Mac titles. Also great for sticking it up to the MPAA- her antique video capture card means she can easily bypass Macrovision and record off Pay TV albeit at Video CD resolutions (Telekom Malaysia copy-protect analog output even for free-to-air channels on their IPTV box. They claim that the contractor did it and it isn't their intention, but cannot get the contractor to refine the system so that only channels that need it are locked).
Helen - Named after Spot's hippo friend. Media center PC and has a front Vacuum Fluorescent Display panel. Running Linux and hooked up to my 3DTV. Also being used in tandem with Edison to experiment with Steam streaming.
Maxwell - Named after [strike]that summon from Tales of Phantasia (the one that causes big shiny balls of doom to bounce around the screen to damage enemies)[/strike] that hamster from Hamtaro. The current master controller and gateway of the network, handling routing, security and naming services.

Violette - My Laptop. Three years old and on it's way out. ATI's newer drivers no longer support the system and thus install, and the keyboard is on it's way out (the 5 key needs to be tapped hard for it to register).

I'll make sure to start posting my wallpapers there too. I like the clean desktop as well, to be honest.. I didn't clean it before posting this screenshot. I normally have nothing but the Recycle Bin, but for some reason TERA ended up there again.. I was working on a Render of Annie from Magic Tree House and she ended up on it because it's just a temporary image I was going to delete later, and KMP player is there because some reason too. Really just removed them though.

I was recently playing around with Rainmeter desktops, but I always find I never really use them. They look cool though.

There is a lot of computers here too, not all belonging to me.. so that's why I named mine too. My previous computer was named NATE after a character I made. I roleplay a lot and one of my characters as a AI companion named NATE so I thought my laptop buddy being named NATE would be cute.

Also, I do love everyone's names for their computers and stuff. Fun fun.

Also, this might be an odd question but I'm super curious. Does anyone know why, when I refresh a page on the Spam thread, I often find that I've traveled back a few pages? It's kinda annoying.. just a momentary annoyance, but still.

I have this issue too. I thought it was because I had unread messages, then realized that forums don't work the same way as e-mail.

It's a minor annoyance, true, but I guess I can live with it. I can't figure out why it's happening tho.
In regards to Violette, the keyboard might just need cleaning of it's contacts, but since she is a laptop, that means complete disassembly, which isn't really easy to do, and time consuming too.

Greta is nearly three years old too (she will be three on May 7th), and so far, she's still running well. I can technically update her graphics drivers to newer versions, but since I don't play big 3D games and stick to the simple casual stuff, I don't see a need to. I also found out the newest Nvidia drivers break older CUDA applications, and that means MediaEspresso loses hardware accelerated transcoding. :/

I was wondering, Angel. I looked up KMPlayer, and it seems to be similar to VLC media player, which has been my go to video player app until recently. VLC is also what I use to screencap from DVDs. Have you used VLC before Angel? If not, how is KMPlayer? I might want to give that a try myself if it can screencap DVDs well.

Also, as for that refresh bug you mentioned Angel, I sometimes get it too, usually after posting a reply to the thread. The page loads up with your new post, and sometimes when I reload, it also goes back a few pages. The browser I use is Opera.

One more thing... I forgot to talk about Jasper, a rather old Pentium III box that belonged to a friend of mine. I meant to use him as sort of a late 90s - early 2000s gaming PC, but I lack a KVM switch at the moment. A KVM switch allows you to use a single keyboard, mouse, and speakers with two or more computers at the same time. Smile Jasper still runs, but I need to find a way to make him quieter as he runs rather noisily.
Extensions? In my PHPBB? Sounds like a 'swell feature - sure enough, I can get away with poking into the core PHP files and stuff, but still it's a total pain in the arse to do so when a Mediawiki-style way of adding new functionality is loads better for administrators. Only problem is that mod authors would have to port things to PHPBB 3.1, and that would be quite a transition period.
Lunchtime.
I have a sort of love-hate relationship with KMP player, Wade. The has a lot of options, and is my favorite for extracting images from DVD's and video files. The extraction options are amazing, and it's the favorite of Tumblr for making Tumblr-style GIF images. (For good reason.) For taking screenshots of DVD's though, I could highly recommend it for that. Got some neat fliter/codec whatever stuff for prettifying up old DVD's too.

I just could do without the ads, and sometimes more complicated subtitle jobs tends to have issues with it. I imagine that's only a problem someone who watches a lot of fansubbed anime has, but it's still definitely a thing. (Things like subtitles hovering over text on phones, signs, etc.). It has somewhat been my Media Player of choice out of late though, over Media Player Classic and VLC. I have tried and do like them both, but I feel more "in control" with the options KMP has.

I'm glad I'm not the only one having the issue with the forum, and oooh.. extensions. That looks cool.

(I finally ranked up. It's been bugging me being a Newbie for so long. Hehe.)
