As you may (or may not) have noticed, my friends and I decided to make the move to a new VPS, mostly because Chris has decided to call it quits with his hosting business, and I don't want to burden him even further either. I mean, he's fine with hosting our site for a while, but that got a little overboard as a server move is long overdue.

We could've gotten away with using a free hosting service, but that presents problems due to how inherently limited they are (after all, they're being sold at a loss anyway). Hence the move to a new host, specifically a VPS from HostUS per Chris' recommendation on a cheap provider. I don't feel like paying per month, let alone per hour, so an annual subscription is the way to go.

And as such my friends and I are planning on putting up a revenue system to make up for any losses incurred, as it definitely isn't cheap to run a website, no matter how small it is. Banner ads from Project Wonderful seem to be a viable idea given how you have complete control on which ads to display, and isn't as corporate-run as the ones from Google so you can leave Adblock off for this site. A Patreon campaign may also do the trick, but getting the audience is no easy task given the niche nature of this forum.

Which brings up to the direction we're taking as a site. Most of us have moved on from the Strawberry Shortcake franchise, and as such we don't feel like discussing about it as much as we used to as key members have either left or went for other commitments. What I'm thinking of is to turn this site to a more technologically-focused message board, though the SSC-related subforums, and the site name itself, will still remain as it is out of convenience as moving to a different domain is a pain and a half as it is.

So what do you guys think about it?

I know it's long overdue and all, so I was thinking, what if we ask Kiwi about moving the site to his server? Chris has expressed his intentions on discontinuing his hosting service some time ago, and while he was kind enough to host this board for a minimal fee, I still feel a little embarrassed and sorry at him for the inconvenience as the move to his server was originally an emergency measure during the 000webhost fiasco in 2011, and I didn't intend to have him host the place for so long.

Strawberryland.eu, or at least one of its subdomains, still appears to be live as of now, and assuming Kiwi still has the zeal to do anything SSC-related, I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask him about a possible server transfer.

I am also contemplating on the use of ads on the site in order to provide at least some revenue. As much as I hate to put a banner ad or two here, I'm afraid we're running at a complete loss here, and we can only go so far in this state. Not helping with this situation is the lack of active and/or interested users partly due to SSC being a niche fandom compared to the likes of MLP. This site shows some potential as a hub for collectors to pool their resources and knowhow on the franchise, but alas, we're yet to reach that goal.

Chris hinted at a possible XSS hack on the site, and while Dave raised doubts about it, I'm not ruling out the possibility given how bug-laden PHPBB is.
As most of you may have been wondering, this site, among others hosted by my friend Chris at TGTAP, has suffered from a week-long downtime due to a hard drive failure. Here's what he has to say about it:

Quote:We're back!

First off, we're sorry about the lengthy downtime we suffered during the past week. For the most part it was completely beyond our control. We did unfortunately suffer some data loss, some of which was simply due to corruption. Now if you continue reading I'll explain what happened, or just skip to the end if you don't care and just want to know wtf is up with the site right now.

Back in the February we suffered some downtime, over 24 hours in fact. Scanning the system logs we were able to pinpoint this to an issue with one of the hard drives, but it was difficult to determine which one (we have 4 in a RAID 10 array) when the tools we have available were reporting them all as healthy! Fast-forward to last week, one of the hard drives decided to completely fail on us. Those of you who know about RAID will know that a single hard drive in the array failing is not a problem, so we simply asked the server techs to replace it for us. No big deal. As I was submitting the support ticket, I was running tests on the other 3 hard drives to check they were ok - turns out they weren't. A drive in the second pair was also failing, and as the test finished running, it did fail. This brought the server into a read-only state, we rebooted to allow the techs to replace the first bad disk. This was done, but we had to wait practically a whole day for it to finish filesystem checks and rebuild itself into the array.

The bad news got worse after that and long story short, the OS had become corrupted and we were unable to get the server to boot up. Combine this problem with incredibly slow support staff and you see where this is heading...
In the days that followed, they eventually replaced the second failed disk for us, and within another couple of days they finally got it into rescue mode and were able to get the server back online (today).

Unfortunately this was when I discovered quite a lot of file integrity loss, corrupted files everywhere. After working all night to get the server back into a workable state, we realised that unfortunately our database system was completely fucked, for lack of a better phrase. Worse still, our on-site nightly backups were mostly lost. The most recent off-site backups we had were over 2 weeks old, but these had to do.

What I've done is restored a database backup from 13th March. Anything that happened since then has been lost. As for files and uploads, we believe most of this is ok, but chances are there's some missing files we aren't aware of. Please let me know (in this topic) if you are experiencing errors or other weirdness on the forums or anywhere else on the website.

While no one is to blame (except myself for not having more recent backups available) for what happened, we feel the support staff made us wait unreasonably long times to both replace the failed hardware and recover the system for us. Downtime was almost inevitable with these kinds of failures, but it certainly should not have been this long. For this reason, we will be transferring TGTAP (and our other sites) to a new server within the next couple of weeks. We don't expect there to be any downtime while this happens, though the forums will be turned offline for approx 15 mins to ensure we have successfully migrated the data.

That's all.

The transfer has started and will take up quite a few days in July to complete. However, During this time, downtime may occur. Do not be alarmed- the forum is safe and will remain in normal operation aside from the intermittent downtime. However, as a backup, remember that we have a backup announce/mailing list system at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sscdrom . Any concerns during forum downtime can be brought up there, and I strongly urge any member who has not yet sign up for the system to join.

I should also note that this new registrar is a bit more expensive- US$10.49 instead of US$9.99 - but it will be worth it and I will still be donating for it out of my pocket - in other words, you pay nothing for the domain. Put the money into good use instead- i.e., fund Kiwi and help out with our rent for the VPS

As you guys know, SOPA and PIPA will have substantial affects on fansites. Publishers of shows, games and movies can potentially abuse the act to silence critics, or if they also choose, fans alike. On this forum itself, it would mean that if American Greetings decide that we do not deserve to exist, they can get the site shut down without intervention from the owners. And as we all know, AG does not take criticisms lightheartedly. As of now, even misdirected criticism is enough to get a site DMCAed (i.e. the Penny Arcade incident). However, the difference is, DMCA cannot touch someone else's site. The owner of the site will receive a warning, and is still given a chance to fight back by means of a counter-lawsuit. SOPA makes DMCA redundant- they don't need a DMCA, all they need is to order the site shut down. And given that we have a US domain name, it is considered to be subjected to US laws as far as SOPA and PIPA are concerned (yeah, the laws of that act are that shallow, If you have a US domain name, you're automatically American. Doesn't matter if your server is actually in Holland or The Netherlands).

This site has a few criticisms targeted at the 2009 reincarnation of the show. It is sure to be shut down if SOPA and PIPA comes to be and AG sees the posts.

Aside from that, SOPA and PIPA will also have hard-hitting consequences on those living outside the US. Do you know that certain shows either do not air or are prematurely cancelled in countries outside the US? And with SOPA and PIPA, it would render the fans of said shows in those country completely zero access to them?

We blacked out our page for the last 48 hours as a gesture of protest against the upcoming SOPA and PIPA act. We are not alone- hundreds of sites including giants like Google and Flickr also protested- Google with their logo blacked out, and Flickr with allowing participating users to black out selected images. The war against SOPA have left a mark on the pages of history, as 10 US senators have backed down and the voting indefinitely postphoned.

However, the war is not yet over. There is still PIPA, which is due for hearing on the 24th of January. We are still in decision on what we shall be doing on that day. It might be nothing, it might be another full-scale blackout.

The biggest offending point about SOPA and PIPA itself is this- one of the proponents specifically targeted international audiences, saying that they do not deserve the show if their country's TV station refuses to carry a show or Pay TV operator refuses to carry a channel that airs the show. It implies that it's the problem between the citizens of the country and their Pay TV provider or local TV channels and is not their problem. When I saw that clause, it triggered a depression fit- it came across to me as crude, greedy and selfish.

Americans, do the right thing. Vote out SOPA and PIPA. While we are not for piracy, we are also not for tyranny and suppression of freedom of speech. Remember the first amendment.

And remember, telling someone how awesome a show is but not letting them have it is akin to bullying. Don't do that, share the show with them instead.

We're now on a new server, in case you've been wondering why the site seems to be responding a bit faster:

Chris Wrote:Good news everyone!

After a period of fairly random unreliability and some downtime over the past month, we decided to move to a brand new dedicated server. The new server has a better processor, almost 3 times as much RAM, twice as much bandwidth, and a 1Gbps connection speed - that's 10 times faster than what we had previously!

This should really help improve our reliability, and we can now realistically aim for almost 100% uptime through the year.
The move is complete, and everything should be working as normally, but if you notice anything strange, let us know!

Mainly because my registrar had a significant discount on .eu domains, I thought I must buy some! I don't really know how it got to my mind, but I found that strawberryland.eu was free, and so I decided to register it. It's just fun to have such a domain name, after all.

Since the incident has already happened anyway, of course I donate this domain to this forum. However I don't really know for what purpose would we use it actually. Of course I don't expect, neither encourage you to change the forum's address, since this actual one is perfect. Though we could still use strawberryland.eu for some supplementary services, or purely for backup. Or maybe we could have cute e-mail addresses like "kiwifruitjam <<insert 'at' sign here>> strawberryland.eu".
Do you have any ideas?

Finally, if you wonder if the term "Strawberryland" is a registered trademark, don't worry, I verified it: it isn't.
