After a month or so of waiting and prodding around, I've managed to dump the stock firmware off the Rockchip revision LeapPad Academy, version EPIC4.user.1.7.2109.312280833:
https://archive.org/details/leapfrog-epicv4-firmware
https://drive.google.com/file/d/13TB0eCU...xQ2XI/view

The firmware can be flashed using RKDevTool 2.69 and later. I did test the system (super), boot and recovery partitions and they do seem to work fine, but don't blame me if anything happens to your device.

I have also included two uboot images in the package: the stock factory uboot based on the latest available OTA update, and a hacked one with the anti-dump code patched out. Make sure to flash back to stock uboot in case LeapFrog issues a new OTA update! Mad props to pseudolobster and RedScorpioXDA for the uboot hack discovery and imgRePackerRK, respectively, without which would make this effort impossible.

Hi,

I tried to install TWRP and everything seemed to go ok.

However now the epic wont boot and loops the leapfrog logo.

Is there a way I can recover?

Many thanks

The Epic was on KOT49H.user.1.1.95.20171215.140555 updated through normal system update.

I noticed in the post:

I'd also like to add that if you ended up with a boot logo loop (i.e. the LeapFrog logo itself, not the animated loading screen), try flashing the Academy Edition ROM first.

Is there a tutorial on how to do that?

I have also worked out that the epic will boot into TWRP and Epic ROM on first boot. But it is any reboot after that where the loop takes place.

Seems to be working fine now. I re-installed recovery through SP Flash. Booted into TWRP on first boot and enabled modify.

This seems to have fixed the issue.

Here's a working dump taken off my personal unit which received the December 15 update.
ROM build number is KOT49H.user.1.1.95.20171215.140555. Should work on all editions using SP Flash Tool v5.1744 and later. Just make sure to BACK UP the stock ROM first before flashing this, and clear /data and /cache via recovery mode after flashing. Trust me, I bricked one of my Epic demo units before and it helps to keep the stock secro, seccfg and NVRAM prior to doing anything with the Epic.

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT in any way responsible for any data loss or hardware damage caused by unsupported software on your LeapFrog Epic. Always observe common sense and make backups before doing anything drastic, OK?

A number of people, parents to be specific, have been asking as to how can they install Google Play Services on their children's LeapFrogs. Unfortunately, this involves rooting the device, mostly using utilities such as Kingoroot. In my case, only the PC version of Kingoroot works; Kingroot may also work, but the default Kids Launcher spazzes out for some reason, making it unusable.

Prior to rooting, you need to install the necessary ADB drivers (I think Windows 10 will have that installed automatically), then enable USB debugging using the Developer Options shortcut in Pollywog or some other developer options shortcut app (tapping the Build Number item in About device does nothing, unfortunately).

After that, install Kingoroot on your PC, then follow the on-screen instructions. Once you get your Epic rooted, follow the instructions in the guide here to replace the Superuser app with SuperSU: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android...y-t3573361

You may want to mount /system as read-write as this involves copy/pasting files to /system. This tool should come in handy in that case.

Now on to the fun part:

Unfortunately I haven't found a working method to get Google Play to work on the Epic without root. cobalt232's modded Play Store sort of works at most when paired with microG, but it is unable to install apps. Sideloading Play Store to system should be easy once rooted though. Copy the four APK files from this ZIP to /system/priv-app using X-Plore or some other root file manager, and make sure the permissions are set to 644:

Once that's done, restart your device, then check your parental controls menu to see if Google Play store runs correctly:

From there you can now download the likes of YouTube Kids and other such applications which aren't available on Amazon or LeapFrog's own app store.

I also recommend using an ad blocker such as AdAway to keep those pesky banner ads from showing up on your kids' games; don't get me wrong, those ads are there for a reason, but they are sometimes so pervasive that it can be harmful to your kids.

[ROOT] Some more LeapFrog Epic tweaks

I know this involves root, as not all parents are up to it, but in case you feel like your son or daughter's LeapFrog isn't cutting it, I found out a few more tweaks which should add a bit more functionality and make it more usable.

As I said earlier, this requires root, which can be done using one-click utilities. The PC version of Kingoroot should do the trick. Once you root your device, you'll also have to install Xposed for the other tweaks to run.

Bring back the recent apps button
I'm sure you've noticed that the navigation bar on the Epic lacks the recent apps button for some reason. 'Tis uncertain as to why, but my hunch is that LF decided to dummy it out to keep children from opening it by accident. Fortunately, the ROM is still largely AOSP-based so it's just the matter of using Xperia/AOSP Navbar Buttons to gain back task switcher access. GravityBox for Kitkat seems like a viable option as well, though I haven't tried it myself yet.

Home sweet home
Ever grow tired of the KidLauncher? That rather infantile app drawer you or your kids are subjected to every time you play with the Epic? For a while I thought it's a matter of modding the framework files to get alternative home screens to install, but turns out it's no different from restoring SD card read-write functionality.

Assuming you've rooted your device already, mount /system as read-write using either ADB or Terminal:

Code:

mount -o rw,remount,rw /system

Once that's done, navigate to /system/etc/permissions then open tablet_core_hardware.xml using a text editor. Look for the following lines:

Code:

<!--feature name="android.software.app_widgets" /--> <!-- Not available in Narnia -->
<!--feature name="android.software.home_screen" /--> <!-- Not available in Narnia -->

...then replace the commented settings with this:

Code:

<feature name="android.software.app_widgets" />
<feature name="android.software.home_screen" />

Save your edited XML file, and then reboot. If done correctly, you should be able to install any home launcher you want. However, you'll have to freeze/disable KidLauncher and Launcher using ROM Toolbox or some other utility for your favourite launcher to work as default.

There are some caveats to using an alternative home screen though. One of them is that the navigation bar may disappear or that some of the soft keys may refuse to show up upon running certain apps (e.g. LeapFrog games). A workaround would be to open up App Manager for the missing keys to appear again. Another issue is with user profiles - as the login screen is built into KidLauncher, disabling it would render your children's profiles (and thus time restrictions and other parental controls) useless, plus rewards and other items earned may not show up (I presume this is due to the alternative home screen being counted as a different "user"). One could try using a third-party parental control panel app, but that would require another setup phase as it isn't weaved into LeapFrog's own parental controls service.
