Canada’s DHX Media and New York-based Iconix Brand Group have partnered to develop and produce a new animated series based on the Strawberry Shortcake brand.

As outlined in the long-term agreement, the companies will co-develop, finance and produce at least 39 new half-hour episodes of Strawberry Shortcake, with the option to produce more.

DHX Media will produce and globally distribute the new show, with its international licensing agency, CPLG, holding first-right of negotiation to represent the brand in certain territories. Iconix will handle global merchandising and licensing for the brand.

DHX will now also hold the exclusive distribution rights to the series' back catalogues as well - I'm certain this applies to the 80s and early 2000s renditions besides the current universe considering they've been uploading those on their YouTube channel as throwback videos.

Iconix, the brand licensing company that owns the "Peanuts" gang of characters, said Tuesday that it is buying the rights to cartoon character Strawberry Shortcake for $105 million. It will buy the pink-haired character from greeting card company American Greetings.

The New York company hopes to breathe new life into the 35-year-old brand with possible clothing, toy and TV show or movie deals. The deal is expected to close within 45 days.

Strawberry Shortcake, who has freckles on her face and wears a strawberry-shaped hat, first showed up on greeting cards in 1980. Since then she has been made into a doll and has been featured on products as varied as pajamas, cosmetics and food. Cleveland-based American Greetings tried to sell the brand several years ago, but the deal fell through. American Greetings, which sells cards and wrapping paper, also owns the Care Bears and Holly Hobbie characters.

Strawberry Shortcake has more than 350 licensing deals around the world, Iconix said. The character "resonates across multiple generations from daughters to mothers to grandmothers," said Leigh Anne Brodsky, a managing director of Iconix's entertainment unit.

"We see many opportunities to grow this brand worldwide," she said in a statement.

Iconix Brand Group Inc. mostly owns and licenses clothing brands such as Joe Boxer, London Fog, Badgley Mischka and Candie's. It first entered the entertainment industry in 2010, when it bought the rights to the Peanuts characters from newspaper publisher E.W. Scripps Co. for $175 million. An animated film, "The Peanuts Movie," will be released by 20th Century Fox later this year.

In a separate purchase, Iconix said Tuesday that it bought the North American rights to athletic brand Pony for $37 million from Chinese investment holding company Symphony Holdings Ltd.

Shares of Iconix rose $1.20, or 3.6 percent, to $34.91 in afternoon trading Tuesday.

Could this mean yet another reboot of the franchise? Or the real question is, will this bode well to us SSC fans?

I don't even know who might be interested in the clip, not sure if there is anyone active here who watches it other then me.. but I'm sort of squeeing about how cute Blueberry looks with twintails. That's like the main reason I even posted this, to squee about twintails.

Otherwise this episode looks okay. The plot looks cute, Strawberry finding a fun way to encourage being brave. Poor Lemon all scared! I'm still trying to catch up, not having the channel that plays these things myself but the Youtube page keeps uploading clips lately. Suddenly the Youtube page is getting a lot more views, I hope that means Strawberry is seeing a surge in popularity. The Cherry Jam song has over two million views! Not all of them are mine, I swear.

I might post my feelings about clips more often? I'm not sure. I still need to review the comics I haven't done yet. (They have been really good though!)

I have tried to look for their addresses on FanMail.biz with no success.
I've been addicted to Minecraft, like a good amount of the internet population and recently have gotten into the pixel art game. It's really fun. However, I'm a bit plauged because I want to make a bunch of Strawberry Shortcake themed images, but the only images that make decent pixel arts are images that are sprites.. and sprites of her are like, non-existant probably for good reason.

I could make a huge pixel art and put it on the floor, but does anyone know of some images that would be perfect for a more normal pixel art that can stand up? Would love to Strawberry Shortcake in Minecraft like that.

Otherwise, my other big problem is going to be replicating Strawberryland within Minecraft itself, and that's going to be a huge venture. I want to make things look as good as I possibly can, so any screenshots of good images of outside houses, and inside houses would be lovely.

I'm sure I can do that on my own, just wanted to know if the community wanted to help. I'll post things as Strawberryland slowly moves towards completion.

Think up our own SSC video game!

Inspired by the "SSC Videogame Wishlist" thread, I thought to start a kind of game here, to think up our own desired SSC video game. How would you make an SSC video game, if you had the chance? What platform would you implement it for? And what kind of game would it be, regarding the gameplay? And how could we get the license from the respective copyright holders for it? Basically you might come up with any aspect of video game making, releasing, licensing, whatever.

Though it all is purely hypothetical - we won't really make an actual game, just talk about what would it like if we did. When you talk, you can come up with your own idea, or you may think someone else's idea further.

Let me start! Well I'd make an RPG game, with 1st/3rd person view. The inspiration comes from FPS-RPG games like Deus Ex and a bit of Half-Life. Except that it would be an all peaceful game, avoiding violence. This would be difficult, though - in a normal FPS-RPG, you have storyline elements with shooting scenes connecting them. It would be hard to replace the shooting part with something else that's still fun, and won't make the game boring. It would be a big challenge!

The game would be played in the universe of the 2003 SSC series, and the player could choose to play several inhabitants of Strawberryland. Different characters would have different campaigns, so it's not about "choose one character to go through the exact same levels". Different characters would get different storylines. Of course Strawberry Shortcake would be playable, and some of my favourite characters - Ginger Snap is for sure, and maybe also Peppermint Fizz. Maybe there would be some mini-campaigns for other characters as well. We could also add some characters we made up, such as Blackberry Bun, though not sure they would be playable. (With Blackberry's approval, of course.)

The characters would get various quests, and in many cases they would need to cooperate with other characters by solving them. Other characters would be rendered by NPCs whom you can interact with. For example, you can ask them to follow you, like in Half-Life (the question is what need would it be, if there is no shooting). Mostly there would be puzzles; find, collect, use items; maybe driving vehicles; go and talk to various characters to progress; etc.. Maybe later I'll try to think up an actual level for the game, just to think about how would it work.

I would implement the game for PC, that's sure, and would release it on Steam. There would be nice Steam achievements for it also. How would I get the license? I don't know - AFAIK it works like that they should ask me first to make a game that is impossible to happen. Maybe I would make a short demo, send them to check it, and we'd make a contract if they'd like it. Otherwise the project would die silently. Also it's a hard question how would I get time and people. Maybe I could design maps and write code, and make the storylines; but I know nothing about modelling and texturing, I'm not smart at them at all.

I create this thread to talk about Strawberry Shortcake episodes and DVD releases.

First I'd like to recite which SSC episodes I've already seen, with dates, mostly for myself, though this way maybe I also remind you of some berry kind moments.

06.21.: Let's Dance
06.25.: Berry Big Journeys
06.26.: Growing up Dreams
07.02.: Big Country Fun
07.03.: Berry Brick Road
07.09.: Happily Ever After
07.10.: Berrywood, Here We Come!
07.13.: Meet Strawberry Shortcake

So I finally watched my DVD, "Meet Strawberry Shortcake", I'll talk about it later. I saw all the other episodes on TV. Anyway, I've found out that the TV channel doesn't broadcast the episodes in order of releases. Moreover, the DVD releases are also mixed up a little here. (For example, "Spring for Strawberry Shortcake" is labeled as the 3rd DVD in Hungary, while according to Wikipedia, it's really the 2nd DVD release.) Anyway, all the episodes are released here (even "Berry Brick Road), however "The Sweet Dreams Movie" is not released in Hungary, or at least I couldn't find anything about it.

About the DVD, I'm a bit of dissatisfied by its quality. It contains the episode in 3 languages: Hungarian, Czech, English. Though the menus are only available in Hungarian and Czech, not in English. There are no subtitles. The menu screen shows both the Hungarian and the Czech SSC logo in the right and left corners of the screen - they didn't bother to create different splash screens for the two languages. When I select "Play", a short commercial is shown that tells me to buy the other SSC DVDs from the publisher, and then the show starts. The only problem that the commercial is pretty loud, while the movie itself is pretty quiet, even related to the menu. Right, just turn up the volume, but when the menu returns, or you start the episode again (so the loud commercial is shown again), you'll get a shock of the sound. The Extras menu contains descriptions of some characters. These descriptions are quite poor and they even have some grammatical errors. After all the movie's quality is acceptable, and that is the point.

As I expected, "Meet Strawberry Shortcake" was more childish than I got used to, and so I think I prefer the season 4 episodes. Though I still liked the first episode after all, I didn't get disappointed, it was just like I expected it to be. And I'm curious about all the other episodes as well.

And I am sad - curious why? I've found out that I've seen almost all the season 4 episodes. I've seen a bit of even the two remaining ones (I just missed the beginning of them). I expected the TV channel to restart the series from the very beginning when it gets to the end of it, but instead it will broadcast a different show in Strawberry's former timeframe. That means I'll be left without Strawberry Shortcake for a berry lot of time. And now I'm really regretting that I didn't buy more DVDs in the supermarket. Who knows when will I find discounted SSC DVDs again? So I'm quite sad because I miss Strawberry, I want to see more episodes! Can you tell me something to cheer me up?

I see some of us have even met several dubs of Strawberry Shortcake. Here is the place to talk about them! What do you like or dislike in the translations? Or just post anything from Strawberry Shortcake in non-english!

I'll start with my observations about the Hungarian dub. I hope you'll find it interesting.

What I like:

Strawberry's Hungarian name: "Eperke", in which "eper" means "strawberry", with "-ka/-ke" diminutive suffix. Such suffix is used to express littleness or cuteness. So the literal translation might be "little Strawberry" or "cute Strawberry". Though as I observed, she's always called as "Eperke", the "Shortcake" part is never translated, it is completely left out.

Strawberry's typical usage of the word "berry" as an adverb (like "berry good", "berry amazing") is translated as "epresen". I won't go into the complicated analysis of this word, and because I don't have enough knowledge about linguistics, I would need to do some research myself.* An example of usage: "epresen jó" ("strawberry good"). From the positive nature of this word, it is never used with negative adjectives, so Eperke never says "epresen rossz" (that would mean "strawberry wrong"). (I told it because when I watched "Big Country Fun" in English, I was surprised when Strawberry has commented Carmel Corn's letter as "sounds like something's berry wrong".) Moreover, "epresen" is also used with verbs, e.g. "epresen köszönöm", which means something like "I thank it with strawberries". I've never encountered such usage in original English, but it should be like "berry thank you". (I should watch "Berry Brick Road" in English, that had an "epresen köszönöm", that's sure. I'm curious if Strawberry really says "berry thank you" there.)

What I don't like:

The dumb translation of the refrain of the main title song. When the original lyrics says "That girl's so sweet, just like her name", the Hungarian says "Nem sért, nem bánt, ő jó barát", which means "she doesn't harm, she doesn't offend, she's a good friend". OMGWTF??? It just sounds really stupid. It's somewhat OK that they didn't keep the original meaning, but stating that she doesn't harm, etc. is just stupid. Like it was expectable from Strawberry to hurt you, so it should be told that she doesn't. It's like they'd expect kids to be so stupid that they need to be told that Strawberry doesn't hurt. If the series were about a little monster, then it would be fine - monsters hurt by default, but Strawberry doesn't. Anyway, this was the reason why I actually searched for the English version of the title, because I couldn't believe that the original says so, it must be an inaccurate translation. And I was right.

The translation of the names of some characters are also poor. As I've already told, "Angel Cake" is translated as "Karamella", which means "caramel". But I find this particular name still acceptable. It can get away, at least caramel is sweet. Another one of this kind: "Crepes' Suzette" is "csokikrém", which means "chocolate cream". But the least are much worse. "Purple Pieman" is "Pástétom", which rather means "paste". Though the dictionary also lists "pie" as its meaning, generally it is not that kind of pie that the Purple Pieman is dealing with. "Huckleberry Pie" became "Puffancs", I can't even translate that word, most of the times it's used to refer to fatty things.

Neutral:

Neither I like or dislike the following things, I just list them as facts.

The Hungarian title of Strawberry Shortcake is "Eperke és barátai" ("Strawberry and her friends"). As I previously stated, "Shortcake" is left out.

The title song's beginning ("Straw-ba-ba-ba-berry[x3] Shortcake") in Hungarian: "Itt van, eljött Eperke[x3] hozzád" ("Here is, came along Strawberry" - just to correct the word order: "Strawbery is here, she came along"). I've seen the intro in several languages on YouTube, but none of them handled it without stuttering.

Generally, the title song is translated so loosely that it's almost unrelated to the original. Considering the title, I think loose translation is OK - the point is that Strawberry is very nice and friendly - unless they take something really dumb. And they did something... just see the first point on my "What I don't like" list.

Finally, just for curious guys, here's the mentioned Strawberry Shortcake title song in Hungarian. (Note, the YouTube embedding code doesn't work for some reason.)

Though the dictionary also lists "pie" as its meaning, generally it is not that kind of pie that the Purple Pieman is dealing with. "Huckleberry Pie" became "Puffancs", I can't even translate that word, most of the times it's used to refer to fatty things.
