Hmm...are you talking about Angel? Evalana and Kiwi pop in the thread occasionally, and Grapes can't be here at the moment, so it's just been me and David. Smile

Prudie, of course. I know she said that she would be fine, but no matter how you look at it, she was going for a heart surgery. Sad

Well, looks like things just got worse for me.

I just broke my laptop.

I tried installing a BIOS upgrade, and messed up.

Back on portable apps on my work laptop again

Looks like you may have to take it in to a repair shop and have the BIOS chip flashed or replaced.

Whenever I have to flash a BIOS on either Lilly or Wendell, I cross my fingers because who knows if the flashing process will mess things up. Lilly especially, since a power outage while flashing her internal NewWorldROM would spell the end for her. And I'm not talking about a power outage during a thunderstorm. I'm talking about a power outage that occurs out of the blue on a perfect clear day.

Wendell's Microsoft Office uninstall success!! This time, the fonts that came with Office were left behind! The uninstaller just passed them up! I think that is a good move to prevent any unwanted font issues if they ended up being removed.

I think I will just install LibreOffice for Wendell. Lilly is my main computer system anyway, with Wendell being secondary as well as being my portable system.

Next up....Norton Internet Security 2011. It's great, but it's features can be replicated by free programs like AVG and ZoneAlarm. It looks like I may not have enough funds to get another yearly subscription, so when Wendell turns 1 year old on March 17th, off it goes. I just hope the newer Norton uninstall programs are more thorough than older ones. Besides, overall system performance may improve once Norton is gone.

Well, Violette's now stuck at the Asus service center- I drove her up shortly after she died.

I'm told that it'll take a week or two before I can have her back :/

It's frustrating. All my Asus motherboards have an Emergency Backup BIOS. If the main BIOS gets corrupted (and it will, given that the Chernobyl virus actually targets the BIOS and overwrites it with garbage), the system will boot the EBB and prompt for a USB stick or CD with a BIOS image to repair the system with.

Guess they thought this is not required because they think UEFI BIOSes are immune to these threats (pfft, yeah, right...)

waiting impatiently for my laptop back. PortableApps is a good alternative, but it can't last forever.

Plus, I want my Steam games :/

Hello PortableApps my old friend, I've come to talk to you again...

Never had any botched firmware incidents before, save for a Motorola V360 that I tried to unlock and flash. Was it because you shoved the wrong ROM image to it?

I'm pretty sure I didn't. I double checked and the ROM is clearly for the A43T/K43T series laptops. I suspect it may be because I put the ROM on an NTFS disk during flashing however.

I've had a few botched BIOS upgrades in the past (mostly due to glitchy flashing software) - all these times, the backup BIOS saved me from wasting time sending the motherboard in for repairs (and oh, the only times I've ever gotten successful flashes are when I use a DOS boot disk with a DOS flasher. In the end, my conclusion is that BIOS upgrades is one thing MS-DOS is good for, since unlike the built-in flash upgrader or Windows flashers, DOS flashers are rock-solid and foolproof).

Yeah I've heard some horror stories regarding the use of Windows-based BIOS flashing utilities.
