Pablo's turn to get a KDE-based Linux. Choice? OpenSuse 13.2 with KDE 3.5. Power management appears to work this time.

I shall finish tomorrow.... I need sleep.

I recommend using the latest versions of the distros and to update regularly to avoid being hit by a GHOST attacks.

The thing is, OpenSuse 13.2 is the latest release of that distro with the current kernel. It's the KDE desktop that is a bit behind. They should replace it with the more up-to-date Trinity KDE 3.5 fork. Here is where I got KDE 3.5 from: https://en.opensuse.org/KDE3

Doing a bit of searching, it appears the GHOST vulnerability was just recently discovered. I would imagine OpenSuse would roll out a security update very soon. PCLinuxOS might take a bit longer, but it will get patched soon enough. EDIT: According to the blog below, apparently this vulnerability has been patched for quite a while, and as long as I use a current Linux OS like OpenSuse 13.2, I should be okay.

Final Linux Setup completed...

Audrey and Greta - PCLinuxOS 2014.12 with KDE 4 desktop.

Pablo - OpenSuse 13.2 with KDE 3.5 as KDE4 would bog down his single core Celeron processor. I could have went with XFCE, but KDE 3 or Trinity are a good middle ground.

Well, it is now 2015. Looks like Eve lives to see another year. Or until iOS9 comes out.

It's good to know Apple Hardware still lasts years. I just wish app developers would also take that into consideration.

In other news, I always find it both amusing and apalling when eBay stores sell Linux CDs and include screenshots that are either from older versions of said Linux distro, or use screenshots showing off fancy desktops and window manager setups that require hours or days to set up. There is usually no message stating such fancy environments aren't included! http://preview.tinyurl.com/qzvt6fp

Borderlands 2 was recently released for Linux, and I've just finished downloading it recently. So I just started playing it.

And, wow. I'm surprised at how smooth the game is on Dongwa. Must be the OpenGL magic. Granted, I have everything on low at the moment, I intend to crank up the power once I'm comfortable enough with it- these GTX260s had a history of overheating, although Asus replaced my original cards with the SP216 version- which has an additional 24 cores compared to the original GTX260- when I RMAed those burnt cards in.

But from the looks of it, Valve's findings on Left4Dead 2 isn't a fluke.

Unfortunately, my progress from the Windows version cannot be used Sad Apparently it has something to do with the game being ported by Aspyr Media instead of by Gearbox themselves.

I find this article somewhat interesting mainly because it illustrates how draconian and intrusive copyright law has become. Outside of obvious piracy of TV shows and software, people are "breaking" the law every day by making Downfall parodies and ripping your own DVDs, and playing them back on Linux, even though you have no intent on actual piracy, or if you are protected under fair use guidelines when it comes to derivative works.

When it comes to Linux, you basically have no choice but to use reverse-engineered libraries such as FFMpeg or Libdvdcss to watch media that you actually own or ripped off YouTube. Luckily, there is very little chance that end users would get sued. And if the big movie studios wanted to make their point, VLC or PCLinuxOS would have been sued out of existence by now.

They are making progress with open source equivalents to proprietary formats, such as Ogg Vorbis audio and Theora video, but those aren't being accepted by the major corporations. Device compatibility can be tricky with non-Android devices.
