I think I need some insight here. Does replacing a CPU with another with same brand but different series require clean install? In this case the CPUs in question are Intel i7 3770 --> 4770

Not necessarily so, but some of your applications may need to be re-activated as it constitutes a major hardware change. Not to mention that it has to be of the same socket and is supported by the board/chipset.

So, it turned out that the 4770 plugs didn't match with the mobo slot.

I was wondering... is the CPU replacement meant to see if it will end up helping with that freezing issue you have been experiencing over the past year?

True. The current circumstances help because I can use the old parts to have the shop build a new PC for my parents, so there's no loss for any wrong guesses.

The CPU is the last attempt, though. My father told me If this is wrong again I should just buy a new PC and give the old one to him.

I'm not trying to convert people to Linux, but I wonder if Linux would have the same freezing problem? That would confirm a hardware problem if it did, and if there was no freezing, the problem lies with a Windows driver. However, Linux can be very different from Windows, and many popular Windows games aren't supported. An easy way to test is to get a Ubuntu live CD, which you can use without installing to the hard drive. You can browse the web for awhile and see if it freezes again.

BTW, what is your parents old PC like? Curious as to how old it is.

Well, it was bought back in 2008. It is still Windows XP, and still functioning decently. Can't remember the detailed specs, though.

Well, my recommendation will be to wait another few months. Intel will be releasing new CPUs (Skylake) and motherboard chipsets (Z170) in a few months. Existing motherboards ware stated to be incompatible due to socket (your old motherboard is Socket 1155. The CPU you tried to put in is socket 1150, but it's about to become obsolete- Intel already announced Socket 1151 to be coming out in a few months and plans to phase out 1150) and RAM (current system uses DDR3 RAM. The new CPU needs DDR4) differences. Might as well just wait it out and buy the motherboard, CPU and RAM new one shot so can futureproof the system. You can keep your existing GPU, hard disk and DVD-RW drive tho. Better to wait it out than to buy now and then suffer one year later.
The Best Medicine > Magic. Because SCIENCE! can prove the former.

Were you referring to the P8H77-M or B75M-A? Or both?
