I feel you dude, I really do.

On a much lighter note, imagine stuffing a game like GTA V to a bunch of diskettes. 60,000 of them, that is. Troll

Can it drive itself? And is it electric or hybrid? Tongue

In other news, Kubuntu 15.04 is here. Time to back up data and perform the first upgrade.

Well, I started the Kubuntu upgrades with Greta being first. Everything went reasonably smooth seeing that I was using Update Manager to initiate the upgrade.

Then came the Nvidia drivers. Bumblebee wasn't working, so I went and tried updating to a newer Nvidia driver. One reboot later and all I got was a black screen.

This had me thinking... do I want to go through reconfiguration of Greta's Optimus setup each time a new version of Kubuntu is released?

After a little thought, I decided to reinstall Win7 on Greta. At least with Win7, I can deal with the monthly Windows updates and have a properly running Optimus system. If it wasn't for Nvidia dragging it's feet with Optimus support under Linux, perhaps I could have switched full time.

I also plan on reverting Lilly back to media PC status and bring Audrey back as the work PC and revert her to Win8.1. Audrey is slower than Lilly, but I don't have the time for YouTube Poop these days. I'm getting close to having a job now. Smile

I think if I want to run Linux again, it will be in VirtualBox. I don't have room for more than 3 PCs at the moment.

I'm kinda thinking of holding off my upgrade to Ubuntu Vivid for another week, for three reasons:
1. I want to wait for the other repos I use to catch up with Ubuntu if they haven't already
2. There is a three day weekend next week because May 1st is Labor Day in Malaysia (we follow the UK and ISO, not the US).
3. OpenBSD 5.7 comes out next week, so I can immediately move on to upgrade Maxwell instead of having a one week gap.

Welp, I used my aunt's PC as a guinea pig for upgrading to Ubuntu Vivid, and my fears are confirmed- even Ubuntu's own Extras repo isn't ready for Vivid. I can imagine a lot of the third party ones like XOrg Edgers and Ubuntu-Wine being not ready as well.

Aside from that, there's a bunch of system-breaking bugs, like the clamav daemon having a potential show-stopper that can cause a lot of head-scratching.

So yeah, I'll be holding out until next week.

To be honest, I actually thought that I made the wrong decision in transitioning Greta back to Win7, but seeing that the Extras repo isn't ready along with the bugs, perhaps I made the right decision. KDE Plasma 5 looks wonderful, but seeing as how X broke after I tried to get an updated Nvidia driver....

I think one reason for the bugs is that Ubuntu and Kubuntu switched from Upstart to systemd init system. Systemd is controversial since many long time Linux users don't like how complex it is. Perhaps that is why Bumblebee collapsed when I tried to upgrade.

Maybe someday, I will be able to give Linux another chance. I just hope Nvidia gets it's act together and gives Linux users full Optimus support. Bumblebee works, but it takes a bit of effort to set up. Doing stuff like that is expected under Linux, but even when I followed the instructions with some distros, I still couldn't get Optimus running right.
