Alright, I'm looking forward to how it goes on your end.

Bad news.... the replacement tab also has the same malware on it. All on video.

The next steps are to edit my findings, upload the video to DailyMotion, attempt to share it with the distributor and or consumerist, and maybe the CPSC. I just thought of something.... what if the CPSC requests my tablet for a sample? That would also make a sanitized ROM pointless.

I will say, keep the ROM on hold until I know for sure how things play themselves out. If the CPSC doesn't request the tablet, I will need to dump the ROM again as there could be a minor hardware revision that may make the previous ROM incompatible. I shall send it to Blake as with the previous ROM, if that comes to pass.

Video is done. It's now being uploaded to my Dropbox account. I was thinking over my options of uploading, which was originally DailyMotion, but decided to recover my old unused Dropbox account instead.

Copies of the video will be sent both to KMS and Runnings corporate office.

If both don't respond, or if the responses are unfavorable (ie: denial or more corporate runarounds), I will go straight to the CPSC. Malware isn't their specialty, but I seem to remember they have recalled digital photo frames in the past years as those ended up having malware lurking on their internal flash memory.

And, emails sent. I should get a response from Runnings since the guy who emailed me seemed nice and to the point. The KMS guys seem unprofessional all around, and perhaps distributing tablets isn't their first priority.

Now I play the waiting game.

They should've known better when it comes to this thing, lest they end up being the news with a rather scathing (and sensationalised) report on how cheap tablets laced with malware are infiltrating people's homes and offices.

Well, things aren't looking up with my current email contacts. I haven't got a response from anyone at KMS, or "Dale" who was supposed to email me.

I will try one last time, and if that fails, I will just report it to the CPSC. I just hope they don't make me send in the Bright Tab through the mail, as I was wanting to get that ROM dumped and sanitized. I would like to keep the BrightTab, but I would definitely use my good micro-USB charger as the included one is very cheap feeling and would likely fail the CPSC's guidelines on it's own.

That's a drag... If all else fails we'll just dump the ROM and have it sanitised as planned.

It's been several months since I responded to this thread, but in short...

Runnings and the distributor probably could care less about the Malware on the tablet TBH. Runnings still had some on the clearance rack a few weeks back, and they never got back to me via email, which is a shame.

I guess the option for me is to get the current ROM sanitized. I still have the BrightTab on hand, but obviously I haven't been using it. More important Android devices got my attention at the moment. Wink

Guess we have no other choice then. And we'll laugh at their faces if they end up becoming the subject of a mandatory recall or something. Tongue
