My babies came home this morning! ♥ ♥ They are one month old, albeit zero days old in adjusted age for prematurity. The three of us slept most of the day. They have bassinets to sleep in and a crib they'll grow into later, though they slept by my sides through a lot of today (while I obviously slept flat on my back) and this won't be the last time they will. Co-sleeping boosts physical health and long-term emotional health for babies.

To respond to Wade,

I haven't seen Family Guy in a long time, but it isn't supposed to be taken seriously. I don't take issue with shows that take nothing seriously, and I don't remember them having an autistic character at all. They had a character with Down syndrome, but she was actually a good inclusion who was acted like a person. Her voice actress has Down syndrome herself, and she is a rather amazing lady who is far more interesting than the show she guest starred in.

Andrea Fay Friedman is an actress, an accountant, and sometimes a teacher in a program that helps disabled people learn skills for living independently. She and her parents are proof that if someone is given the right supports and raised well, they can do pretty much anything. Basically, Friedman is proof that the Social Model of Disability works, not the Medical Model.

I'd say the Medical Model has its usefulness to an extent with physical disabilities, though the Social Model is useful for everyone and the Medical Model seems to only make things worse for people like you and me. The Medical Model tends to encourage a lot of giving up. If people are told they are too dumb (or worse, too bad) to learn anything, be it social or academic, guess what many end up believing? The Medical Model also encourages non-disabled people to shun disabled people. You get the idea of how it can lead to vicious cycles.

The Social Model can be misread to sound like we are saying we are not disabled, though, which isn't how most proponents of it feel. We are disabled. We just believe that often does not have to impair us, ideally speaking. For example, myopia isn't considered an impairing disability in most countries because of the accessibility to glasses and contact lenses. If every disability was as respected and made a non-issue of as myopia, well, can you imagine how easier the world would be?

To clear up a huge misconception I apologize for accidentally giving you if I did, you are not a bad person if you laugh at disabled characters who were intended to be funny. I love funny disabled characters. So much of my own life feels like a comedy. What bothers me is when the media tries to be serious and just scares everyone in the process, of which there are countless examples of.

In House Rules which is a fictional novel I recommend never reading if you do not want to rage, the brother of the autistic character, looking at another family's house, says something along the lines of,
Quote:"I could tell this was a house with no one with Asperger's in it, because the people in it were happy instead of miserable with their lives destroyed."

That wasn't just the brother being a brat. The parents thought the same, and in the end of the story, said brother was rewarded for suffering from his brother's existence.

I hate the idea that we are automatically terrible people to tolerate. Most of us already don't feel great about ourselves. Why make that worse? Why act like the only way we could be happy and not terrible burdens is if we were [strike]cured[/strike] dead?

Ah yeah, the Medical Model - which is just nonsense here. It has a lot of its roots in the Changeling mythos. In fact, several autistic people and mentally disabled people in the medieval times were thought to be Changelings, i.e. fairy/elf/demon/troll/etc. spirits switched out for the "kidnapped real human" they were only resembling. The belief was that if the Changeling was killed, the "actual human" would return in their place. The danger for these people went without saying.

Why the heck does Windows have the tendency to corrupt itself every so often?

That's it. I'm going to help her rescue her work. It stops there, she's going to go out and buy a new laptop with her boyfriend.

I just finally completed reinstalling mine (today's menu: downgrade Python to 2.6, because Gimp for Windows refuses anything newer and I stupidly installed the bleeding edge Python 3.2 earlier). I only settled down to play DNF for an hour and she comes in whining about her laptop suddenly BSODing on bootup again.

I guess sometimes Aspergers people can be too generous and loyal too :/I think I better go get a diagnosis.

Idk. Maybe it's a common issue?
I mean... ~50% of the members of this forum are on the autism spectrum... it must have a meaning... Wink

Great to have you back, Prudence! Smile

By the way, maybe I have already mentioned it, but I find this game pretty much awesome. I suggest you to check it out, if you have some time. Smile

Well, you didn't give me any misconception with your original message, I just thought that myself after I read your reply and was thinking over what I just read.

Thank you for the kind words. Smile I really do appreciate it. It made me feel better!

Yep...Im going to revive Jasper as a lightweight Linux box. All I need is an extra power strip for his monitor and Jasper.

Lilly's 2.1 home theater system has two audio inputs so both can share the same speaker system.

Right now, Im doing initial configuration and installing my Linux games. After that, I will hook Lilly back up.
