Hey there! Nice to hear from you. Smile

It's been very quiet around here lately, and David seems to be avoiding this place. And, I currently don't have much to talk about other than video game related things.

Thanksgiving is coming up very soon though, about two weeks from today.

I don't have much to say either, other than discussing on the finer points of fatal exceptions and video game mods.

I did not abandon the forums. I'm fighting my own demons. Helen, my Media Center PC, died. Edison needs an upgrade, and I have several stupid issues caused by region-locking haunting me. Also, the franchise I chose to move towards away from MLPG4 is also apparently not as good as I thought since apparently Mattel had stopped bringing the toys in since late 2008 because they weren't selling well Sad

I know my rant below is not about your particular case of region-locking, but it is region locking nontheless.

I think region-locking alone will prevent me from getting a BluRay player. That, as well as the stupid AACS mandate that forces new BluRay players to eliminate any analog video output. That extends to the Xbox One and PS4 since those can play BluRay in the US.

I know HDMI has far better video quality than component video, and Anna-Lena now has four HDMI ports. Still, I plan on using said ports for that Black Friday Android Smart TV stick, the Roku HD, the future HD digital cable box, and my DVD recorder. Any more HDMI devices and I will need to buy an expensive switch box.

Analog switchers are cheaper and can provide a comparable HD picture if you don't mind it being pixel perfect, but draconian DRM schemes like AACS are eliminating analog outputs from new BluRay devices as they try in vain to stamp out piracy. This is not going to work as there are HDCP strippers out there that can enable you to rip HD content to your computer just as easily. People are going to get around these restrictions, and they always will.

Oh, one more thing. That BluRay player you got before the "analog sunset?" The AACS now has a nifty feature called the Image Constraint Token, where you can only get a full HD picture from your movie through HDMI, and ICT will force downscaling to 480i over component video, which is capable of delivering 1080p HD just fine.

I'm lucky though. Not many of the things I want to watch are on BluRay anyway.

Evalana, where are you at? It's been ages since we last saw you here.

Are you okay?

Sandy, Wade, this one's for you.

Quote: Statistically, it has been proven time and time again that once floundering projects can regain their former glory just by going open source. For example, Netscape Communications with Communicator, by going open source and allowing Communicator to evolve into Firefox. Firefox is now one of the most widely used browsers in the world, just like Communicator before it. My friends and I think Winamp has this potential as well given it's cult status in the US and wide usage in many second and third world countries. Let's try to get AOL and Nullsoft to free up the source code so it can evolve, and take back the crown from the heavyweights!

AG is really... Stupid. Idiot level stupid. For allowing content developers (*cough*Cupcake Digital AND Leapfrog*cough*) to do this of all things and screw over the region that supported the franchise the most (South America? HAH! They're number 2! South East Asia is where the SSC Love is mostly coming from!). And to think I forgave them for threatening to sue and issuing a DMCA at Penny Arcade. Maybe I belgiuming shouldn't have forgave them.
