  My "MP4" player collection.
Posted by: cpd2009 - 10-20-2019, 01:41 PM - Forum: Computers, Games & Tech - Replies (1)

Over the years, I have amassed a small collection of iPod clones that would eventually be known as "MP4" players. The MP4 moniker usually has nothing to do with the MPEG-4 video codec, but rather, it was meant to signify an evolution from the standard MP3 player. "MP4" ends up just being a fancy name for these players since they can display photos and video and have additional features like built-in games and sometimes an FM radio tuner.

By the mid-2000s, you could find these MP4 players at major retailers sold at deep discounts compared to name brands like Apple, Sandisk or Creative. The price reflected the overall quality of the devices. While some devices could actually be decent, others can have cheap build quality, buggy firmware, and poor battery life.

Despite this, I had an appreciation for these kinds of media players... at least the ones that worked well. Below is my collection that I have built up over the years, along with details about them.

1 - RCA M6204-B MP3/video player. This little player was a Menard's holiday special in 2014. It looks like it has capacitive buttons, but it's just a thin flexible plastic sheet that sits over mechanical buttons. The buttons do work well, and navigation is easy to figure out. It has your basic functions like MP3/WMA playback, FM radio, and photo viewer. FM tuner isn't the best. It's not that sensitive, so distant station reception is very hit and miss. The player is limited to onboard storage, which in this case, is 4GB. No expandable memory slots at all. Sad It works rather well, even if the menu navigation is a bit slow.

2 - Mach Speed "Eclipse" 180 Pro. This is/was a very common brand seen in big box discount stores like Walmart, Kmart, and Shopko. The 180 Pro has that familiar Chinese iPod-clone design, only with branding printed on the reverse. Features are similar to the RCA, but the layout mimics the iPod interface somewhat. It also has a low quality digital camera and expandable microSD memory. The player itself comes with 4GB onboard storage. As a useful player, it's debatable. The music playback functions well enough, but the FM tuner leaves a lot to be desired and the player takes a really long time to start up. Build quality is decent thanks to an aluminum casing.

3 - HOTT MU763. This is my only Rockchip MP4 player I own. The case is aluminum like the Eclipse. The player has a resistive touch screen, which works okay but sometimes doesn't respond like it should. I really like the equalizer in the music player. It has something called "MS EQ" which with the right headphones, can produce a rather deep bass and crisp treble. FM tuner is once again not that great. This player would be alright to use if it weren't for one "feature" that ends up being a nuisance. In the music player, you can shake the player right or left to go forward or back in the playlist. If you carry the player in your pocket, this "feature" may trigger by accident and your music playlist gets disrupted as the player goes forward or back unintentionally.

4 - Altus M204-B - Probably my personal favorite of all the MP4 players I have used. My original from 2010 is long gone, but I found new-old-stock on eBay a couple years ago. As you can see, I have two of them. The batteries charged up fine and continue to hold a charge. The menu navigation is easy to learn and responsive, and the media features work really well. The best feature is the ability to customize the startup, shutdown, and main menu background images. It also includes a camera which isn't that great. The FM tuner works really well and handles weaker stations fine when the display goes to sleep. Has 4GB onboard storage and additional microSD card slot.

5 - Hipstreet Crossfade 4GB I found this on sale for $15. There's a reason it was so cheap. The build quality is among the worst I have seen. The player is very lightweight plastic, and the button switches are very glitchy. The FM tuner is quite excellent for such a cheap player as well as music playback. There's no expandable storage and you're limited to the onboard 4GB storage. My player is now disassembled because the battery has swollen, and I need to find a safe way to disconnect the cell before trying to recover the data that's still on the device.

6 and 7 - Generic MP4 players from China I found these at a small town RadioShack franchise. These were the most generic MP4 players you can find. The one on the right requires a microSD card to function, and came with a 16GB card. The one on the right has no expandable memory and 8GB onboard storage. FM tuners are okay. The player on the left suffers from glitchy buttons and the one on the right is having battery issues. Battery doesn't seem swollen, but it will not charge at all.

8 - Eclipse Supra Fit From the same company behind the 180 Pro. Has the features of that model but with one of the worst capacitive screens I have used. It's way too sensitive. You can barely touch the sides of the plastic bezel and it will register a random touch on a part of the screen. It has 8GB storage and microSD slot.

9 - Visual Land ME-907 I originally purchased this in 2012 to replace my first Altus M204-B that died. The UI is entirely built on Adobe Flash, and has the ability to play back Flash movies. It could load Flash games, but IIRC, the touch screen doesn't work with Flash content, so you can't click on buttons presented in such files. In addition to a 8gb storage, it has a microSD slot and a mini HDMI output. The UI is very responsive and full of fancy animations, though it doesn't have dedicated buttons for changing music tracks. In order to change the track, you have to turn on the screen, get past the screensaver, and then go back/forward in the playlist.

I'm currently trying out my players to see which one I can use as my main music device. I was thinking of just getting one of those cheap USB-stick MP3 players that use a AAA battery, but seeing how I have so many of these, there's no real need to add yet another.

Epic Academy Edition ROM v1.8.160 (KOT49H.user.1.8.160.20190530.103948)
Posted by: huckleberrypie - 07-24-2019, 10:50 AM - Forum: LeapFrog Epic - No Replies

Here's another ROM dump I made for the Epic:

ROM build number is KOT49H.user.1.8.160.20190530.103948. Should work on all editions using SP Flash Tool v5.1744 and later. Just make sure to BACK UP the stock ROM first before flashing this, and clear /data and /cache via recovery mode after flashing. Trust me, I bricked one of my Epic demo units before and it helps to keep the stock secro, seccfg and NVRAM prior to doing anything with the Epic.

Code:

P.S.: If you're getting a signature error upon flashing, try unticking SEC_RO and then try again.

  Toy Story fanfic: Benson's Melancholy
Posted by: huckleberrypie - 07-09-2019, 03:38 PM - Forum: Creative Corner - No Replies

Benson's Melancholy

LEGAL DISCLAIMER: The following is a work of fiction, and I do not in any way claim ownership of the Toy Story franchise or its characters, created by Pixar and produced by Disney.

Benson remembers his former career as a ventriloquist's dummy in the 1940s, and the time he spent being Gabby Gabby's loyal assistant and brother. Set post-TS4.

The thud of the pram at the carnival grounds struck me as an end of a friendship between my brothers and I and someone whom I since considered to be my sister. Maybe I've been a pawn for so long. A tool. A button man as what I've heard.

The elderly antique shop proprietress' daughter promptly took me back in storage, wondering about the bizarre occurrences that has been going on ever since Woody and the others went in and took Forky back with them. Sitting alone in one corner of the curio cabinet while my brothers are daydreaming in another corner, I took off my suit jacket and cushioned it behind me as I sat down and reminisced. I've never done that often, apart from when my previous owner, a once-famous ventriloquist named Martin Fisher, also known as Marvellous Marty, had to clean me and my brothers up after a long and gruelling tour throughout the country. Mr. Fisher knew no other immediate relatives after his parents died and viewed us all like family, something which I am more than glad to know.

Gabby has been a good kid, a sister to me if I might add. Realizing this goal of hers to be free from the torment of gathering dust in a shelf, in a way, I, too, wanted to experience being loved and cherished again. It's sad, really, all they think of the likes of us these days, apart from those who bore more of a resemblance to plush toys like those in Sesame Street, is that we were terrifying or creepy. Sure enough, the very sight of us moving a limb or two would give someone the jeepers, thinking we were cursed or something. Or that we reminded them of some popular horror series in the 90s from that Steine fellow with a dummy who looked a touch like us. It's stigmatizing, really, I can understand the fear but that wasn't my brothers and I intend to do, let alone maim someone.

Now, where was I? Oh, yeah... I don't exactly remember when I was made, though it was in the early 1940s at the earliest. An elderly French guy named Sébastien Camilli did all the handiwork, as he had been making puppets and dummies during the early 20th century before moving to the States. Mr. Fisher commissioned Monsieur Camilli to do us all for his theater and carnival appearances for the kids. He had dummies like us before, but memories of those were rather fuzzy to say the least.

The earliest performance that I could recall was in the town of Jefferson, Illinois in 1943, where the kids, one of whom is the daughter of an Army doctor who happened to be a classmate of Mr. Fisher in elementary, were quite amused by the antics he and us dummies did. Mr. Fisher would sometimes ask the girl, whose name is Molly, to say hi to his father for him, being it's been quite a while since the two school pals met each other. Through his voice I did impersonations, cracked jokes, and basically entertained everyone who would pay for such an act. There were also times when Mr. Fisher and I, along with my brothers, would meet with Fred McCracken and his pal Wacky, who as we all know had a radio show when they rubbed elbows with a certain orphan girl from New York who was looking for her long-lost parents, in a collaborative act. The more, the merrier, right? And it was – backstage I would grunt at Wacky and we would do pranks at each other when our owners aren't around. Too bad it was Mr. McCracken's swan song at the time and he was compelled to retire with Wacky after a one-night show at the Tri-County Theatre. Which gave me the sinking feeling of being put in a closet, never to make a kid smile again.

It was in the mid-1960s when Mr. Fisher sadly passed away after a debilitating stroke that signaled the end of his career as a popular children's entertainer. I could have been under the employ of another ventriloquist, but honestly, it would never be the same. The voice may sound alike but it's the subtleties that some may point out. It may not matter much to children but it does to someone who has the dedication. I wanted to let out tears as what humans do, but that is sadly not what I am capable of. Nevertheless, I felt it was all done with for me and my brothers. Lucky for Pinocchio, his days as a puppet ended with a happily ever after; to us, it's being a permanent guest at the antique store which would serve as our home for decades after being handed over by Mr. Fisher's relatives.

I never harbored any disdain for those who put us all in storage, it was a fact of life for us playthings. I'm just disappointed that we could have made more kids smile and all that. And it feels rather dreadful that no one would view you in a positive way for being a staple of horror stories and Halloween pranks. It was an unintended consequence of looking eerily like a human, something I have no control over. Whenever I felt rather lonesome and somewhat despondent from the stark reality of not being played with any more, my brothers would sometimes cheer me up with circus acts and other sorts of tomfoolery. While the other three were rather silent and would grunt at most when left to our own devices, I learned to speak on my own after picking up the mannerisms both from my theatrical character and from other people over the years, often influenced by popular culture and from what I have read whenever I stumble upon reams of National Geographic magazines collecting dust, though to be honest I am yet to fully grasp today's modern culture being that my brothers and I have been trapped in this sort of prison for decades, the likes of Davy Crockett and black and white televisions and things as recent as Evel Knievel and Niki Lauda would be something I'm having more of a grasp of.

It's not that the old lady running the place is any cruel though. I'm just sad that no one would appreciate us other than just a mere museum piece or a haunted house prop to strike fear into the hearts of those who dare enter one. If anything, it was like Woody's sister Jessie who suffered pretty much the same fate as us – loved at first but eventually forgotten when people move on or pass away. I'm glad Jessie got over her resentment as well; it was never a good thing to hold a grudge, that's for sure. Mrs. Riley, the proprietress, would occasionally do an inventory check and see if any one of us is accounted for, and while some antique or charity shop owners would sell things for clearance or crassly recycle them, she preferred to let things trickle down naturally and use the newly vacated space for "new" items. Fortunately for us, she wasn't that scared and would dust the specks off us and talk to us in a rather gentle way.

"Oh, I hope you four fellows will be all fine there," the elderly woman spoke gently, "Don't you boys worry though, I'm not that scared,"

I'm glad we knew a woman who would treat us just fine if not for having us stay here sitting ducks. For every person who'd cower in fear at pariahs like us, there's always someone who'd actually care for you one bit without having any scorn or ridicule. At least being at her antique shop is a better consolation than either decaying in a dumpster or slowly eaten away be termites who'd find my wooden head and limbs to be a tasty morsel for whatever reason. And then there's this little fellow in a yellow polka-dot dress, red pig-tailed hair and Mary Jane shoes. Except she is twenty inches tall and sitting un-played with in a glass cabinet for as long as she and I could remember, her blue-grey eyes and vinyl face reflecting both sadness, joy and a longing for someone to have a quaint tea party with her. We never crossed paths with each other being my brothers and I were at a different part of the store, until Vinnie, the mischievous of us dummies, wandered off in search of something. Running around like a cross between a reanimated corpse and Raggedy Ann, Vinnie was looking for a banjo to try and play some tunes in when he bumped into Gabby, who built up the courage to wander around on her own at night.

"AAAAHH! Don't hurt me!" Gabby shrieked, terrified at what she saw and crawling back from what appeared to be a rather ghoulish figure.

Vinnie gestured that he meant no harm to her in the clumsiest way possible. In a swift change of mood, Gabby was quite amused and laughed at the lanky curtsy my brother tried to do. He didn't mind being laughed at, as to us it was all part of the act. After all, we were meant to be performers anyway, even for a solitary audience such as this doll we've just met. My brothers and I came to where Vinnie was at, and he and Gabby seemed okay and unhurt.

Being that Gabby was meant to be a friend to everyone, the girl simply smiled at us once she learned we were of no ill intent.

"Hi there! My name is Gabby Gabby. What's your name?"

"B–B–B–Ben... son," I stammered, "Ch–Ch–Charlie Benson,"

I didn't really want to say more than a few words, let alone hold a conversation, being I was used to having my ventriloquist employer do all the talking for me, so to speak. Either that or I was just too shy.

"Would you like to be my friend?" asked the redhead.

I nodded and smiled, or at least as much as what my stiff and stilted wooden face can do. Gabby gave us all a big, big hug, and it felt like a glimmer of hope for us four, if not a definite answer to our prayers.

To be honest, Gabby, or Gabrielle as I jovially call her sometimes, can be a little annoying and bratty, but overall, she has a big heart and of good character from within. I just lament that she had the rather cruel misfortune of having a defective voice box, rendering her an inferior toy for children to play with. Not that a girl can't have a tea party with her and use her imagination though, but Gabby's distorted record player meant like a sort of life sentence to her. To her it was a curse, a punishment, sometimes grumbling to herself that the factory didn't know better. She didn't harbor any ill will at anyone though, only sighing that she would've been like any other of her kind if not for this fault.

Over time I learned to open up to her and share my thoughts on life and things, as well as my experiences with Mr. Fisher, Bert Healy and Fred McCracken – even if my conversations with her were rather stuttery and laconic at first, with Gabby's aid I gradually learned how to speak to her in a passable if not perfect manner. We'd crack jokes, play card games like "Go fish!", and just do what a brother and sister pair would do as what human siblings do. She was quite amused at the rather hammy and clumsy vaudeville acts me and my brothers would pull off. It didn't matter to her even if they aren't perfect or well-rehearsed as long as we put on a show. Gabby would meanwhile tell me about her experiences here at the antique shop, as well as vague memories of the day when she was made in 1959, springing to life as the factory worker was done with her.

"I don't get it," Gabby sighed, "They could have tested my voice box more, right?"

I simply sighed in commiseration. Nothing much I could do, I'm afraid.

"I freed myself from the restraints and came out of the box for a bit, pulling the string behind me," Gabby recalled, "I knew something was wrong to begin with, and it's no wonder my first owner didn't like me,"

"O–Okay..." I agreed.

"If only someone could give me a new voice box so I can talk properly,"

I nodded and gave her a pat in the shoulder. As it was late in the evening, I gestured that I needed some sleep, and we all went to take some shut-eye. I didn't have any night clothes of course, so I simply took off my jacket and tie and went to limp myself down at a nearby box, folding my suit to serve as a makeshift pillow.

Years passed and it was all the same routine as before – same old morning and evening stroll with Gabby and the others, pushing the pram around for her when no one is looking, and warding off intruders who'd dare harm the girl, like that cat who'd walk along the floor and claw at those unfortunate enough to be in her reach. My brothers and I did it out of gratitude for being good friends with her, and in return Gabby showed kindness to us.

And there came one early morning when a pull-string cowboy named Woody and a makeshift toy named Forky. Woody was just looking for an old friend of his, someone who had been away from his life for more than a decade or so. Oh, I could tell that Bo Peep has changed a lot over the years. Tell you what, she sure knows how to give me and the other boys a rough time. I feel sorry for Woody and his girlfriend though, I really am. It was understandable that Gabby was driven by sheer hopelessness and desperation when she thought cannibalizing the cowboy's voice box would be a great idea. To me it wasn't necessarily so, as Gabby will always be loved by a child no matter who she is in my opinion. I simply had to do what I had to do for a sister. In the end my brothers and I made amends with Woody and the rest of the gang, knowing I've wronged them unwillingly. Gabby of course did the same, and being the generous old fellow that Woody is, he gave his old voice box away for the girl to be given a chance to be loved, even if Harmony, the child who Gabby longed for, callously dismissed her as uninteresting. There's obviously more to love than just Harmony, said Woody, and he was right, there was.

My brothers and I volunteered to help with carrying out a daring escape from the antique shop. Tying Bo Peep's "skunk-mobile" to the pram, we rallied our way out of the place, flat-out and into the carnival, where Gabby and the others would rendezvous with Woody's current owner, Bonnie. Woody, Gabby, the two plushies and I were the ones in the pram, sitting there until the carriage hit an obstacle, spilling us out of the cart. Suffice it to say, the woman who encountered me was horrified at my rather macabre self.

To Gabby, it was the last time she saw me and my brothers. To me, I felt gutted and somewhat betrayed as a sibling. I asked myself, why did she do this to us? She had been so kind to us and then she'd leave us all like this! Vinnie, Benny and George sympathized, but at the same time comforted me and assured that she didn't want to leave us all for good either. I then thought, if there's any silver lining to this, it's that we fulfilled our purpose to her and gave her the means to be loved and cherished more than we could even muster.

Still I have these pangs of loneliness and guilt as I sit here by the cabinet where my sister used to be. I didn't know of any other way to get in touch with her, so I sneaked out on my own and scouted the park for Amy, the girl whom Gabby befriended. Fortunately, she left her bag at a park bench with her address on it, which I made a mental note of. I surreptitiously went back to the shop and got my friends to hand some supplies to me so I could type a letter on one of those old Underwoods. If this ain't a circus stunt we're doing to get everything done, I don't know what it is. Pat Morita would've dismissed us as Karate Kid rejects for our lankiness, but it just works. Imaginary tears welling in my painted eyes, I tapped the keys until I wrote something of a letter for a dear sister who had been a good friend to us all...

Dear sis,

I'm sorry if your brothers and I have failed or disappointed you, and I'm sorry if I've been rough with everyone, especially Woody and Bo. I know, we never meant to harm or hurt anyone, and it's very much understandable that you only wanted a better life than years and years of monotony at the antique shop where we lived for most of our lives. I really do hope we'd meet each other again, even just for a bit at your new house. And can you say hi to Amy for me please? I know it's rather awkward but eh, it shouldn't hurt to ask, right?

Rest be assured that we'd look after ourselves for as much as we can, and Gabby, take care of yourself too and be a good doll to your Amy.

Your loving brother,
- Charlie Benson

Again as no one was looking, my brothers and I sneaked our way out of the shop for a while, and in another circus act, deposited the letter I made in the mailbox. The next morning the mailman came and took the parcels to be delivered to their destinations, our letter included. It was fortunate enough that Amy didn't dismiss the letter as junk, even if she wondered who on earth is that Charlie Benson and "Gabrielle O'Neil" on the mail. Thinking it could be for another person, she left the mail in her room until she found the time to give it to its supposedly intended recipient.

Gabby couldn't help but cry equally imaginary tears as she read the letter. She was overjoyed to know that I didn't get mad or feel any ill will towards her after that incident at the carnival. With the help of her fellow toy friends whom she had the pleasure of meeting and playing with, she too wrote and printed a response on Amy's computer, having learned more about 21st-century technology and all from her new toy friends. My sister sure had a lot of catching up to do.

Dear bro,
If anything, I should be the one to apologize for that sudden departure I made a while back. I hope you can forgive me though, but I'm glad that you are more than willing to do so. And how's life at the antique store lately? Still finding that pinstripe suit of yours stuffy, I presume? Don't worry, Amy has a sewing machine and I might as well do some clothes for you guys so you could look a little more, um, fashionable. I've actually made friends with some of Woody's friends on the Internet like Trixie and Rex. I mean, they're a 'swell bunch and I'll see if I could introduce them to you some time. Take care of yourselves, and let me know if you guys get a new ventriloquist owner too.

Your loving sister,
- Gabby Gabby xoxo

Author's notes: Couldn't resist doing another TS4 fanfic so here you go. I decided to portray Gabby and the Benson boys as siblings since I don't see them in a romantic relationship or anything of that sort anyway. I always felt that Benson was a big brother to Gab, someone who is more than willing to care and protect her with all he can do for a lanky dummy.

The Sebastien Camilli name was a portmanteau of Sebastien Ogier and Eric Camilli, two rally drivers who have been competing in the World Rally Championship. The former gained notoriety for scoring six consecutive driver's championships since 2012.
Bert Healy and Fred McCracken and his dummy Wacky was, as some of you might guess, were from the Annie musical. Thought I'd do a mini-crossover for good measure and to add up to the backstory.

And speaking of mini-crossovers, there's also a cameo from Molly McIntire from the American Girl series of books and toys, since a friend of mine is a huge fan of Molly and I thought of her when I incorporated this into the narrative.

Azpen G1058B low-end Android tablet review
Posted by: cpd2009 - 06-20-2019, 09:56 AM - Forum: Computers, Games & Tech - Replies (3)

There are plenty of cheap, no-name brand Android tablets these days, and many American big box stores sell these things too. Whereas Walmart and Target tend to carry slightly more recognizable names like RCA, smaller chains end up with even more obscure brands and models that have rather unique features when compared to their similar ilk. This brings us to the Azpen G1058B 10.1 Android tablet.

And this is the box it came in...

The most unique feature of the G105B is the included 4G LTE connectivity, something you don't see often in discount tablets sold at major retailers. The MSRP of this tablet was $149, but because the store I bought it from is going out of business, it was marked down 60%, and I got it for only $60.

The G105B comes with a Mediatek MT6735 Quad-core SOC with a Mali T720 GPU, approx 1GB RAM, and 64GB of built in flash storage. There is a microSD card slot that supports up to 64gb cards, as well as two SIM card slots, one already used with a bundled SIM for FreedomPop, which I will get into later. The tablet has Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Performance is rather decent for this tablet. Startup was a bit slow when first powered on out of the box, but subsequent start ups have been much smoother. App performance varies. Small apps like terminal emulators and system information viewers open up rather quick, while complex apps like Google Mail or Play can take a bit to get going sometimes. After loading, they tend to work more or less okay.

Preinstalled software is limited to just the Google apps and a few basic utilities like a file manager and user manual. There is a "My FreedomPop" app for use with the associated pay-as-you-go internet service. There is also an FM radio app as this tablet comes with an FM tuner. I haven't seen any Android tablet sold at a store that comes with an FM tuner until now. I have tested it out, and reception is rather good outdoors as I was able to get many channels I normally can't get indoors. It also has a recording feature too, so you can save FM broadcasts to MP4 audio format, though the extension has to be changed from 3gpp to m4a to get them to work with Winamp.

The camera is alright. There isn't as much detail compared to my LG Rebel 3's camera, and the front facing camera needs a good amount of light to be usable. I tried Skype with family with said tablet, and I had to sit near my apartment window so my face wouldn't become a dark shadow. The indoor lights didn't help brighten my face at all. Later on in the thread, I'll post some photos taken with both the G105B and the LG Rebel 3 and compare them side by side.

I will give a warning about a potential unwanted app that is preinstalled in the tablet. Malwarebytes reports that the infamous Adups is preinstalled as a system application. The Adups variant present on the G1058B is classified as a PUP (potentially unwanted app), and is part of the tablets built in "Wireless Update" utility. Still, it may be advisable to follow the guidelines here to "freeze" this bit of software.
https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/21...for-adups/ The variant on the tablet is the first name on the list. The other two Adups variants, which contain an actual backdoor, aren't present on the G1058B AFAIK.

Finally, about FreedomPop. The tablet came with a bundled offer for this pay-as-you-go mobile internet service. The SIM was already installed in the tablet, and you just have to follow the instructions on the included leaflet to activate it. The FreedomPop services offers free 500mb 4G LTE data per month, but there are a few strings attached. Yes, the 500mb a month really is free, but FP really tries to get you to part with your money. When you activate, there is a small $.60 or so fee, but that's just the beginning. Want the free 500mb and only 500mb? Keep your eye out for the "no thanks" links. They tuck them away in the corner in small print, where the big green button tries to gain your attention so they can sign up up for a free one month trial of their Premium 2GB plan. That 2GB plan is presented as a monthly option, but the fine print states that if you forget to cancel the trial before the period is up, your card will be charged around $95 for one year of service. There is also a sketchy feature called Automatic Top-Up, which charges your debit/credit card $15 to add more data to your free service when you get within 100mb of reaching the 500mb free data cap. You can't turn this off either unless you sign up for a $6.99 a month "safety net" feature.

FreedomPop may have good prices if you manage to score one of their plans that actually bills monthly, but their hard selling of their additional premium features and sketchy practices almost makes them a complete turn off for me. Luckily, you can swap out the FP SIM and install any compatible GSM SIM. The tablet is unlocked. Smile

Here is the Geekbench Results. Top is the Azpen. Bottom is the LG Rebel 3.

And finally, the home screen wallpaper of my G1058B.

Oh yeah, the tablet also came with a free Bluetooth keyboard, featured in the first photo. It attaches to the included patent leather sleeve with hidden magnets, and connection is rather easy. I haven't given the keyboard much of a real test yet since I don't really like compact keyboards like that, but after connection, it does seem to work as you'd expect. Typing a query into Google Play worked as it should.

- Universal App for Smartphone & Tablet
- New Quick Navigation
- New EPG Feature
- New Calendar Feature
- Performance Update

Notes:

'Tis just a simple mod on the app for it to run on rooted devices, particularly those cheapo TV boxes like the x96 Mini. I know you can use an Xposed module or MagiskHide to prevent the app from looking for any signs of root access, but for some reason those don't work at all. Not to mention that I did this to show how ultimately pointless it is to add anti-rooting measures on the app though it is understandable as to why. And I gotta thank xperia64 for making this possible as he's the one who showed me the ropes on how to mod it in the first place. Wink

Microsoft declares the official end to its smartphone era
Posted by: huckleberrypie - 02-01-2019, 10:38 AM - Forum: Windows Mobile/CE/Phone Modding and Discussion - No Replies

So it's a lost cause then, all despite acquiring Nokia in an ultimately horrid move that cost the latter:

Quote:https://www.computerworld.com/article/33...e-era.html

Microsoft earlier this month reminded owners of devices powered by Windows 10 Mobile that support will end Dec. 10, although some services may remain active for months after that expiration date.

In a support document revised three weeks ago, Microsoft also told Windows 10 Mobile customers to now steer for Android or iOS smartphones.

"As of December 10, 2019, Windows 10 Mobile users are no longer eligible to receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free assisted support options, or online technical content updates from Microsoft for free," the Redmond, Wash. developer said in the support document.

The end-of-support was not completely unexpected.

Previously, Microsoft had said it would support each version of Windows 10 Mobile - initially Mobile was upgraded every six months, just like the desktop OS - for "a minimum of 24 months." The last Windows 10 Mobile feature upgrade was tagged 1709 in Microsoft's now-familiar yymm format and issued in October 2017.

Just before Windows 10 Mobile 1709 launched, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore, then the company's top phone executive, acknowledged the obvious: "...building new features/hw ((hardware)) aren't the focus," he said of the OS and the decision to withdraw from hardware design and sales.

In the revised support document, Microsoft urged anyone still carrying a Windows 10 Mobile device to dump it for something that runs Google's Android or Apple's iOS. "We recommend that customers move to a supported Android or iOS device," the firm said.

It's not an everyday occurrence for Microsoft to exhort customers to switch to software not created by its own engineers.

But even though security and non-security updates will cease as of Dec. 10, some services tied to Windows 10 Mobile and the its devices will remain active after that date. "Automatic or manual creation of new device backups for settings and some applications will continue for 3 months, ending March 10, 2020," Microsoft said. Other actions, including uploading photos to online storage and restoring a device from existing backup "may continue to work for up to another 12 months from end of support," or until late 2020 ((emphasis added)).

One sign of Microsoft's seriousness in ending support was its acknowledgement that commercial customers - who are often shielded from Microsoft's most painful changes - will be cut off at the same time as consumers.

The finality of support was anticlimactic after the earlier drama of Microsoft's foray into smartphones and its quick - in corporate terms - retreat.

Less than two years after announcing the acquisition of Nokia's phone assets - and little more than a year after that deal was finalized - Microsoft effectively admitted the move was a disaster when it wrote off $7.6 billion.

Along with the enormous charge against earnings, Microsoft began laying off thousands of workers, most of them inherited from Nokia.

Microsoft stayed in the smartphone business but only after significantly scaling back. Even that strategy was unsustainable. By early 2017, the firm's phone revenue plummeted to near zero.

Later that year, Belfiore announced that all development on Windows 10 Mobile had ceased.

Little Orphan Annie fanfic: The Letter That Never Came

The Letter That Never Came

LEGAL DISCLAIMER: The following is a work of fiction, and I do not in any way claim ownership of the Annie franchise or its characters, created by Harold Gray, Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin and Thomas Meehan.

Shortly after the events of the musical storyline, Annie is the girl who has it all, but still feels a void in her. Turns out that forgiving the woman whom she loathed was just the thing she needed.

It felt like a dream come true. A Cinderella story, so to speak. One day you were an impoverished orphan girl, yearning for your real parents to come back and embrace you with open arms; sooner or later you are now in the care of the richest man the world has ever seen. I asked Molly to pinch me as I may have been in a dream or worse, but it was true, it was real. From grubby hand-me-downs donated by the Salvation Army to dresses my adoptive father willfully bought off Bergdorf Goodman. And yet despite the luxury I've had experienced since my adoption, wearing that red and white velvet dress I became so known for throughout the whole of New York City, I never got too consumed by my newfound wealth, unlike that snob Myrtle Vandenmeer whom the teachers at P.S. 62 expressed their favoritism. I always told myself to keep my head low and not to forget about my past, especially as my Daddy Warbucks came from an equally impoverished background himself, having being orphaned since he was about my age. I felt that explained the bond that developed between him and I, in that both of us have pretty much been on the same boat after all.

I may have won the fight and got it all, but there's this gut feeling that something is missing. Material wealth can get you so far, but there's still a void left in me, there's still a job left unfinished. And by that I meant my real parents, David and Margaret Bennett, whom I've sadly had the misfortune of not having spent my childhood with for a decade. Twelve long years. I may have moved on somewhat, but I still yearn to at least pay my last respects to them. And if there's anything else, to be able to forgive the one whom my friends at Hudson's Home for Girls and I experienced misery, woe and unjust drudgery. It's hard given the circumstances, but I really do hate to hold a deep-seated grudge as this isn't what Mom and Pop didn't want me to grow up with. Anne Bennett may have been a tomboyish bruiser, ready to exchange fists when need be, but she sure isn't one to be a cold-hearted young lady.

We were having a stroll in Manhattan when I asked Daddy if we could head over to the New York Women's House of Detention, where Miss Hannigan was currently detained in.

"I see you finally had the heart to have a little forgive-and-forget," said Daddy.

"I guess..." I replied meekly.

"We're having a detour, Drake, take us to the detention facility," ordered my father.

"Daddy, I've had this gut feeling in me... I've been through so much abuse and all, yet something tells me there's still hope to the matron whom Molly and I loathed back at the orphanage," I confessed.

"Well I'm glad you grew up to be an upstanding and humble young lady, Annie," praised Daddy. "Mercy is one thing that sets you apart, my dear. You've been through and all, and when given the chance, you forgave. Always."

"Part of me wanted Miss Hannigan to rot in jail, but broken as she was, how could she hurt me?" I cried. She sure was an unpleasant character along with her brother Rooster and his girlfriend, but she was a product of her society. Perhaps Agatha may have turned up to be a better citizen should she be in a different circumstance?

A few minutes later and we arrived at the facility where Hannigan and other female detainees are paying their dues. It was harrowing to say the very least, perhaps far worse than what myself and the others experienced under our matron's care (or lack thereof). I guess I was lucky then. Daddy, Drake and I disembarked off the Duesenberg, and we were escorted to the reception area where Daddy asked if we could pay a visit to Miss Hannigan.

"We'd like to have a few minutes with Agatha Hannigan, please," ordered Daddy.

"Will do, Mr. Warbucks," the clerk complied.

We were led to a block where Hannigan's group was detained in. Poor Agatha felt alone and miserable, suffering from alcohol withdrawal and depression ever since she lost her position at the orphanage whom she was usurped into no thanks to a relative of hers. It didn't help that her brother Rooster got a life sentence for a major heist he and his cohorts pulled off at one time, out of sheer desperation due to the Depression.

"You have a visitor, Agatha," said the warden, "A former orphan of yours,"

"Annie, I see," said Miss Hannigan glumly. She was then escorted to the visitor's cubicle where we were separated by a wire mesh window.

"Miss Annie Warbucks, my dear!" Miss Hannigan said with a faint smile. Perhaps those pangs of conscience wisened her up quite a lot, feeling immensely guilty and tormented by the crimes she committed - child labor, physical and emotional abuse...

"Good day, Miss Hannigan," I greeted.

"Likewise," replied Miss Hannigan. "I guess your Daddy has given you everything at the mansion then. You won, Annie, you and your friends. And here I am, living in misery and pain,"

"I'm sorry," I sympathized. "I didn't mean to be rude to you either. I just had to stand for myself and my friends. I should be the one who should apologize,"

"Why would you even need to forgive me, Annie? You've been through hell and back! I deserved nothing from you!"

"Rest be assured that you'd be given a parole in no time, Agatha," said Daddy proudly, being the well-connected man that he is.

"I'm afraid you'll have to save that for a deserving felon, Oliver," Miss Hannigan deferred, "If anything, there's this purgatory that I have to live through for now. I can't call myself a free woman as it is,"

"But Agatha..."

"No, thank you, Mr. Warbucks. I've made up my mind,"

"Well, if you say so. But I'll do what I can to make you feel better here in jail, believe me," assured Daddy.

Miss Hannigan let out a faint smile, having being cheered up for the first time since she was incarcerated.

"Annie..." said Miss Hannigan.

"Yes?" I asked.

"Annie, I have a confession to make," confessed Agatha, "There is a letter your father wrote shortly before he died. The landlady at your old place kept it from what I heard. If there's any consolation for what I have done to you, dear, I'm sure this would atone for how I've been cruel to you and your friends,"

"Really?" I cried.

"Yes, really," replied Miss Hannigan, "Now be a good girl and pay Miss Riley a visit. Tell her you came for a letter your parents wrote. I'm sure that would give you that closure you needed,"

"Time's running out, Hannigan, visitation time's almost over," grunted the warden.

"Well I guess I gotta' go for now, Annie,"

"Sorry about that, Miss Hannigan," I said.

"Please, call me Mommy Agatha instead, there's no need to be too formal,"

"Don't worry, I'll write you whenever I can, it'll be alright,"

Needless to say, I left the prison with a thorn taken off my back and a smile in my face, being assured that all is forgiven. We then paid a visit to Rose Riley, the landlady of a boarding house my real parents and I used to reside in when I was a baby.

"You're Rose Riley, I presume," asked Daddy.

"Why yes, I am, Mr. Warbucks, come on in!" greeted the landlady, "So what brings you here?"

"I presume you know Agatha Hannigan, right?" asked Daddy.

"Ahh, you mean that old hag?" Riley scoffed. "Heard she got jailed for fraud and child abuse lately,"

"Well, there is that, but we paid a visit to her on Annie's request," Daddy elaborated, "She felt despondent and depressed for the crimes she committed, to say the least. Annie didn't want her to suffer though, and I can tell from the woman that she's sorry,"

"Oh my!" Rose exclaimed. "I'm glad your daughter still has the heart to make amends with the woman whom she had a hard time with,"

"True, true," said Daddy. "You see, that brings me to another reason why we came here. Agatha mentioned a letter that Annie's parents wrote before they died,"

"Kinda' surprises me that the G-men overlooked that one," said Rose, "I have it here,"

Rose passed it to Daddy, whom the latter handed over to me. Tears welled out of my eyes the moment I saw the letter. I tried to fight them back, but it stung me too deep.
Dearest Annie,
By the time you have read this letter, we would most likely be gone by now. I know you would be saddened and most especially be heartbroken by our absence, but dire circumstances have forced us to give you up, even though you, as a wee little lass, would at a tender age be facing a dark and sinister surrounding ahead. We wished we would be together as a family, but even if that sadly did not come to pass, rest be assured that you will soon be in good hands, and we will always be there to guide and inspire you, no matter where you are. It fills us with pride that you have grown up to be a strong yet caring young lady, and that you have never given up on your journey in life. And we hope that no matter how stormy life may seem, the sun will soon come out tomorrow.
- Your loving parents
Never have I felt so immensely relieved my entire life, and to say the least, this dark chapter in my life has finally been over. But I also had to pay my respects as well - Rose led me, Daddy and Drake to the cemetery where my real parents were buried, thanks to Miss Riley's generosity as she was able to get his friends and relatives to pitch in for giving my Mom and Pop a proper burial than an unmarked pauper's grave. I prayed for their eternal rest and left a bouquet of flowers; Daddy promised to build a lavish mausoleum for them, but knowing my inner sense of modesty we settled for something sedate yet dignified.

"I guess I really am lucky," I said to myself.

A/N:Portions of the fic were inspired by Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events as shown by the title and the letter in question. That brought tears to my eyes to say the least, so I decided to remix it a bit and apply it to the Annie story. I've also incorporated portions from BioShock 2, particularly when Eleanor Lamb expressed her willingness to forgive her mother should the player spare all key storyline characters.

  New year... new upgrades?
Posted by: cpd2009 - 11-29-2018, 10:09 AM - Forum: Computers, Games & Tech - Replies (5)

It's not even the 1st of December yet, but I'm looking forward at my plans for 2019. Prepare for another long post...

I'm currently thinking over plans to either upgrade or replace Greta. I have had a chance to use her over the weekend during my Thanksgiving mini-vacation. Basic things like web browsing or text documents are still no problem for her. I do notice her old Pentium B960 may be getting a bit outdated for some of my Steam games. The games do take a bit of time to load compared to Pearl. Should this be expected though? The Pentium B960 is clearly an entry level CPU from 2012, and I'm surprised she is still capable of even basic tasks with Windows 8.1. Her old GeForce 610m is also very capable of playing my Steam games on low to medium settings.

I'd rather have Greta on Windows 10, but as I mentioned before, that OS is extremely taxing on her hardware. Windows 8.1 is much faster but is far more clunky in design.

If I were to replace Greta's old HDD with a modern SSD, would that be enough to run Windows 10 without any slowness, or will the B960 be a potential bottleneck? Given her age, would it be more advisable to replace Greta with a modern laptop that can run Windows 10 from the get-go?

I also plan to upgrade Pearl in steps. I'm starting to discover that she may need a slightly beefier CPU and/or GPU for video recording tasks. As it stands, recording video is mostly flawless, but there are small moments in the recorded videos where obvious frame-dropping can be seen. Since I mostly record TV stuff, the frame dropping is a minor nitpick, but I'd rather have the video as smooth as possible. I don't know if I need to either upgrade the CPU or the GPU. Movavi uses hardware acceleration for recording and displaying the video preview from what I can tell. I want to upgrade the RAM first since it won't take me long to save money for another stick of 8gb RAM. That will make the board run in dual-channel mode, so would simply installing another RAM stick improve performance alone?

If I do need to upgrade the GPU, I would like a GTX 1070 and an upgraded Corsair PSU to match. A GTX 1070 would seem overkill to someone like me, but if I ever want to play Super Lucky's Tale on max settings, I'll need that.

The question is.. will I need to upgrade the CPU, RAM and GPU? Or will just one of these being upgraded improve things alone?

There is also the matter of Pearl's HDD. Her HDD is quite old, being the 500gb disk from Audrey, who I purchased in 2012. So far it doesn't seem to have problems, but the older the drive gets, the possibility of failure increases. Whenever I do need to replace it, I will get an 1TB SSD, despite being very expensive. What color of SSD should I go for? Western Digital has various different kinds of SSDs, such as Blue, Black, and Green.

And finally, perhaps an unnecessary upgrade... getting a BluRay burner. BD-R discs are a bit on the spendy side, but backing up photos to disc is a bit tedious since I only have a DVD writer.

For the want of a Mac...
Posted by: cpd2009 - 11-19-2018, 05:20 AM - Forum: Computers, Games & Tech - Replies (3)

This is going to be a long one, but perhaps if I write out my thoughts, it will help me make a better decision. Here it goes...

I'll cut to the chase. I want some kind of Mac computer, possibly an iMac. I shouldn't have sold off my old Mac Mini a few years ago. It would have made it easier to switch.

For those who don't follow the Spam Thread. let me get you caught up to speed on my current situation. I have my own Windows based PC that I have built myself nearly two years ago. It has an Intel Core i5-6100 dual-core CPU, GeForce 750Ti graphics, 8gb RAM, and a somewhat dated 500gb HDD. It's my first PC build and it came out great, though my cable management sucks. I haven't had any issues with my build, and I'm confident that I would be able to upgrade the system when needed.

For all the good my custom PC has brought, it still has brought on a bit of stress, no thanks to Microsoft. Windows 10 is becoming a mixed bag for me. The most recent OS updates brought along nasty bugs like users documents being deleted or Windows not remembering file type associations. I haven't encountered any of those problems myself, but compared to Windows 8, 10 doesn't seem to perform as well, especially during boot up. It also brings along features and apps I don't particularly care for like Cortana or the myriad of bloatware. Not all of it can be uninstalled of course... unless you use third party tricks to forcibly remove them. But I tend to stay away from such tools that mess with system files.

There is of course, Windows 8.1, which is still supported with security fixes until 2023. I have this on my ancient Gateway laptop since Windows 10 is too much for it. I only have one Windows 8.1 license which is being used on said laptop. There is also Linux, which is starting to become more and more user friendly. Issues still abound if you ever need to use proprietary graphics drivers, and not all of my Steam games are Linux compatible.

I guess that is a good segue into explaining what I use my computer for. I don't do anything that requires lots of hardware power. My activities mainly consist of browsing the web, watching online video and playing casual type games and pinball simulators. The heaviest work I do is in video editing, and I do want to learn how to draw digitally as well. My current computer is obviously up to these tasks, but what if my computer gets hit with some nasty Windows 10 update bug in the future? Will Linux ever get to the point where I can drop Windows and skip macOS completely?

Given my current needs, I have considered either getting an all-in-one PC with downgraded specs to fit my workload and giving my current PC to my mom at home. She too has one of those AIO units from 2012, and it's an entry level AMD E-Series one. Windows 10 is getting too much for that old computer as well and my mom could really use a new PC.

Besides a Windows based AIO, there is of course, Apple. I understand that Apple really tries to nickel-and-dime their user base and marks up the prices on their tech far higher than their PC equivalents. They also like planned obsolescence, with every macOS release dropping several models of older Macs. In fact, my old mid-2011 Mini isn't compatible with Mojave. It can only run up to High Sierra. I would go the Hackintosh route, but it requires lots of terminal use, manual editing of config files, and just lots of tinkering to get macOS running on a non-Apple computer.

That is where my idea of just switching to the "dark side" comes from, I guess. For all the bad things Apple does, I still admire their product designs and macOS itself. I just got this feeling that an iMac would be a better fit for my computing needs. I still do have a lot of Mac software linked to my Apple account, and iMovie would be good enough for my video editing needs. As for audio/video capture, my current Honestech Vidbox has Mac drivers available. I would just need capture software to go with it. As for games, two of my pinball sims, Zaccaria Pinball and Pinball Arcade, do have Mac versions on the Steam store. I even have Pinball Arcade linked to my Apple account as well, but my Steam content won't transfer to that version. As for my Windows casual games, it's not that big of a deal if I can't get them to run on a Mac. I still intend on resurrecting my old XP box for older PC games someday and those games do run fine on that PC's old Radeon 9600XT AGP card.

I have a tough decision to make here. Either stick with what I have, get a Windows based AIO replacement, or start saving up for several months to buy the iMac. The model that I would particularly want is $1,499. I'd prefer the iMac have at least 8gb RAM, 1TB Fusion Drive, and dedicated graphics. I can configure the iMac to have 16GB RAM at order, and it's the only way to get 16GB since RAM is not upgradeable in iMacs. Given my daily use requirements and my low gaming requirements, 8gb would probably be enough.

I could go Low End Mac as an alternative, getting an older refurbished iMac or Mac Pro. But forward compatibility becomes an issue with the aforementioned macOS releases dropping older products from the support list.

If I go the Windows AIO route, I would have to get a possible downgrade in graphics quality of my pinball sims, but I would still be able to do everything else just fine. I would be willing to accept the tradeoff since I hardly play those pinball sims as much as I used to. The AIO would have to be capable of utilizing my video capture device, but I have seen AIOs that use Intel i5 CPUs.

And there you have it. Perhaps I'll just end up sticking with my current setup in the long run, but who knows what the future may bring?

Oh yes, forgot to mention. macOS' yearly updates tend to go far smoother than Windows' bi-annual ones, probably because Apple still has internal bug testers. Tongue

I also think macOS doesn't force ads into the OS like Windows 10 does. I'm starting to see ads in Control Panel, and the latest Insider previews are also testing ads in the Mail app. :/

Leapfrog Epic stuck in logo loop
Posted by: plummy - 11-07-2018, 09:40 PM - Forum: LeapFrog Epic - Replies (1)

Hi,

I tried to install TWRP and everything seemed to go ok.

However now the epic wont boot and loops the leapfrog logo.

Is there a way I can recover?

Many thanks

The Epic was on KOT49H.user.1.1.95.20171215.140555 updated through normal system update.

I noticed in the post:

I'd also like to add that if you ended up with a boot logo loop (i.e. the LeapFrog logo itself, not the animated loading screen), try flashing the Academy Edition ROM first.

Is there a tutorial on how to do that?

I have also worked out that the epic will boot into TWRP and Epic ROM on first boot. But it is any reboot after that where the loop takes place.

Seems to be working fine now. I re-installed recovery through SP Flash. Booted into TWRP on first boot and enabled modify.

This seems to have fixed the issue.
