Well, in the end, the repair took nine and a half hours of my life, of which three and a half would've been better spent on sleep. I hope what I've threw in is enough to prevent this from occurring again. The main time-waster was that I needed to run Windows update almost a dozen times to get the damn thing completely ironed out. Then it occurred to me that she had not been keeping her machine up to date. So Windows update is now automatic and mandatory.

Seriously, it would do Microsoft good to put out a Windows XP Service Pack 4. There were over a 170 updates, and that's after I applied Service Pack 3!

Bought Left 4 Dead 2 at the insistence of a friend. Just finished downloading it. Taking a disk backup now, not going to risk it. Darn thing took 3 hours to download from scratch, mainly because the net was slow.
Today is the day we get our Dish Network upgrade.

Right now though....we don't have any running water! It just stopped running on all our faucets. Odd.
And Dish Network guy upgrading our equipment right now.

EDIT: The new receivers are AWESOME!! Much faster than the old ones when it comes to viewing the guide and going through menus.

Oh...the best part? Two tuners on my new DVR receiver. This means I can watch one show and record another, and use a fancy-schmancy Picture-in-Picture feature and keep tabs on both BabyTV and BabyFirstTV at once!

Does it require some tuning or something?

Not really. Only thing needed was a splitter that splits the signal from the single satellite-in cable into two, which then goes to the two tuners on the unit.

As for new equipment besides the two receivers, we had to get a new Dish antenna installed as well in order to receive the HD signals of cable networks.
Alright....

My new DVR has two video outputs. One of them is for connecting to the TV, known in the manual as "TV1 Connections". You use this to connect the DVR to your TV via video cables. There is also another set of video outputs, labeled as "TV2 Outputs". The manual says "Do not use any TV2 connections to connect to your TV. These connections are inactive".

LIES!! ALL LIES!!

I just tried them out, and they do output video! This means my new DVR has two sets of composite video outputs, same as my old one. How is this useful? I use one set of AV outputs to go to my TV for regular viewing, while I use the other set (well, just the L/R audio in combination with the SVideo output) to connect to my Sony DVD recorder. With this setup, I don't have to swap connections every time I want to use my DVD recorder, and I also am able to use higher quality SVideo hookups when recording TV shows to DVD.
Going for a triple post here!!

I got the idea for using the picture above from Grapes, from a forum post on the old forum, long gone. I still remember it and found the source via Google Image Search. All credit for this idea goes to you Grapes. Smile

Anyway, the main event...

The two channels for the baby audience, BabyTV and BabyFirstTV now must get along. Tongue

In other news, Ruby the First is officially decommissioned. I took off the back panel to get a look at the internals.

Wow, Ruby 1 has more complex circuitry than Ruby 2....I looked into Ruby 2's internals through the back air holes with a flashlight, and the board is a lot less complex than the first incarnation! And Ruby 2 is only a few years younger than Ruby 1, being made in 1987. (Ruby 1 was made in 1984).

Oh...where's David? I have been the one posting here the past few days. Tongue
Here I am, recovering from overeating earlier.
This is the new year, same as the old year.

Not true at all. The new year is always different.
