It is indeed surprising considering how overzealous Nintendo is when it comes to their IP. I can understand what they did with Super Hornio Bros., but this wave of purges and government lobbying to suppress modding of their hardware is crossing the line imho.
It's getting close to a week since I installed Linux, and settling on Mageia + Xfce desktop. And I think I finally got my video capture device working, though it takes a bit of dirty work.

Rather than give up and go back to Windows, I decided to actually try solutions to my device and driver issues, even though the solutions may or may not always work. The Nvidia drivers are working great, and I may have found a solution to a nagging audio issue I encountered with the Dazzle device.

My switch to Linux may be permanent, but I'd have to stick with it for longer than a month to make sure. But as it is now, everything is rock solid stable, and media playback is excellent once the Nvidia drivers are installed. YouTube playback in Firefox is flawless. 60fps videos play great with no visible screen tearing.

I still have to test Steam/Proton, and general Wine compatibility with my existing casual games. I have had success getting PopCap games running in Wine about 5 years ago, so I'd think as time goes on, Wine will get much better at overall compatibility.

When it comes to editing my recorded videos, there is this neat program called Avidemux, which works similar to Xmedia recode, but the UI is far more responsive when you need to find the right frames to set the start and end points. The downside is there's no NVENC support in Avidemux, and I don't think any Linux-based video conversion app supports NVENC yet.

As for apps I use beyond video recording, I have Firefox as the default browser, Qmmp (Winamp clone) as music player, and Xine as video player. VLC, as always is used for taking screencaps off DVDs.
Screenshot time. Smile

Current Xfce theme is Adwaita + Metabox window borders. Font changed from Sans 10 to Nimbus Sans L 11. I do like how you can assign a custom icon and name to the Xfce app menu in the upper left.

I also went back to a single monitor setup using my HP S2031 at 1600x900 resolution. Dual-monitors are cool, but I don't have any real need for dual monitors. I also needed room for my printer.

I presume this is the Core i3-6100 rig you've been playing with for the past few years, yes? Makes me wonder how the Proton runtime works on games like Mafia II and all that.

Indeed it is, and I'll have to say, my Linux setup boots up much faster than Windows, and sleep and hibernate work great too. As for Steam and Proton, I may have to test that out soon. I knew that Mafia II demo did run decently on Windows, but with some frame dropping in intense scenes. With the Proton overhead, I wonder if it's going to make that worse or not.

Then again, I may not use Steam much anymore. With the games I like to play either on Switch, or headed to Switch, there's no real need for the PC versions anymore unless they get pulled from the Nintendo eShop at some point.

I have run Pinball FX2 on Steam+Proton before, and there was no noticeable performance difference between Linux and Windows. It's an older game though that runs well on max settings. The Sonic Adventure PC port also ran well. I couldn't get Pinball FX3 to launch at all.

My PopCap casual games should more or less run with a vanilla Wine install along with the necessary DirectX libraries. I was able to get Bejeweled 2 to run on Wine before.
I got Steam installed from the Mageia repository, and I'm downloading Mafia II Demo as I type. The current version of Proton is 4.11. I think last time I tried it, it was still 3.xx.

It will be interesting to see how well games like Mafia II can run in Proton, if they can at all.
And, the Mafia II demo won't run with Proton. Sad Tried to launch it, it installed some prerequisites (or it attempted to), and got nothing.

Hmm, strange. Compatibility charts for the retail version do show up as either platinum, gold or bronze at worst.
I'm just going to leave this here... Tongue
